As India explores 2+1 projects in #WesternIndianOcean I analyse why enhancing western #maritimesecurity is critical for deepening #IndiaAfrica #maritime co-op. Thank you @abhijit227 for valuable insights on the paper.

#India has diversified crude suppliers since the Hormuz disruption, but many alternative supplies still depend on vulnerable maritime corridors. A Bab-el-Mandeb spillover shows why supply diversity alone cannot ensure energy security: @Mishraesque or-f.org/40637 #EnergySecurity

Bab-el-Mandeb is emerging as a second maritime front as #Hormuz remains disrupted. For #India, closing both chokepoints would remove rerouting options and expose the limits of supplier diversification: @Mishraesque or-f.org/40637 #EnergySecurity #RedSea

Diversifying suppliers isn’t diversifying routes. As Houthi threats at #BabelMandeb compound the Hormuz crisis, India’s crude shift cuts producer risk, not route risk. My new @orfonline piece on hedging beyond reactive diversification

A simultaneous #Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb disruption could push #India towards longer routes around the Cape of Good Hope, raising costs and transit times. New Delhi needs to diversify suppliers, storage and maritime corridors: @Mishraesque or-f.org/40637 #EnergySecurity

Somali piracy is back, with hostage-taking and ransom at its core. Naval patrols alone won't fix it; African states need capacity to police and prosecute. My op-ed in @Telegraph on what it means for India: #SomaliPiracy #MaritimeSecurity 👇👇

#FromtheIvoryTower | Despite shared maritime security interests, has India-EU cooperation in this sector remained elusive?
A recent study published in the European Journal of International Security (@EJIntSec) argues that sustained EU–India engagement in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) has not produced deeper cooperation in maritime security.
To compare the EU's & India's preferred methods of engagement, the study titled ‘Institutional choice and the limits of security governance: EU–India maritime cooperation in the Western Indian Ocean’, by Philipp Gieg (@PhilippGieg) and Abhishek Mishra (@Mishraesque), examined governmental arrangements and ad hoc coalitions, drawing on practitioner interviews, policy documents, official statements, datasets and secondary sources.
They found that the EU’s preferred starting point is formal institutions that align with its emphasis on legal authority, legitimacy, and established rules. But due to high transaction costs, limited flexibility and reduced visibility, it also focuses on informal arrangements like the Critical Maritime Routes Indian Ocean (CRIMARIO) or the Shared Awareness and Deconfliction (SHADE) programme.
Meanwhile, India has played a much larger role in creating and participating in informal arrangements that give it the scope to shape agendas and participation while keeping sovereignty costs low, found the study.
Simply put, the EU tends to treat informality as a complement to a largely formal, legitimacy-oriented approach, while India relies more heavily on informal formats for flexibility, agenda-setting, and sovereignty preservation.
The authors describe the resulting pattern as “functional coexistence without institutional consolidation.”

New piece @IDSAIndia: #Africa now has real seats inside #BRICS But a bigger seat ≠ a united voice — #nonalignment hasn't disappeared, it's moved indoors. Real test: does it deliver financing & agenda power, or just representation? 👇👇

What India’s BRICS Reset Means for African Non-Alignment
By: @Mishraesque
African non-alignment is now practised through BRICS ministerial and consensus documents as much as through bilateral hedging.

My piece @htTweets in which I argue that #Sahel juntas' sovereignty-for-security bargain has failed, with JNIM stronger than ever and pushing into coastal #WestAfrica. With France & US having lighter footprint, India has an opening to become a more consequential security partner
#Opinion | The sovereignty-for-security trade offered to Sahelian populations has not delivered, and the international response has remained too incoherent.
