Much punchier accusations from Sir Malcolm Rifkind - a former defence and foreign secretary:
"I choose my words very carefully. I think this week Donald Trump has shown himself as a person to be repulsive; as a President of the United States to be a disgrace to his own people as well as to his international responsibilities.
"We all know his actual reasons for this are a grubby attempt to win a few more votes in the midterms by trying to get oil prices down.
"In order to achieve that, he has not only betrayed Ukraine in the middle of a war, fighting for its very existence, but he is also directly - not indirectly - directly responsible for the deaths of many Ukrainians who will not now be protected by the attempts that have been successfully made using intelligence provided indirectly by the United States."

Thanks Ben! I'm looking forward to chatting to the audience about Whistle Down the Wind on Sunday at ArtHouse in Crouch End. Link to tickets in shared post. And more Bryan Forbes to come on the next two Sundays.
One of my favourite films of all time is screening this Sunday (18th October) @arthouseN8 with an intro by the fabulous @ReelJoBotting. It’s a bona fide masterpiece and it’s a brand new 4K restoration so will look marvellous. Check it out. Tix here arthousecrouchend.co.uk/prog…

🚨 Goldman Sachs has put numbers on Brexit choices.
Current Brexit deal: +0.3% GDP
Customs union: +1%
Single Market: up to +5%
Full EU membership: up to +6%
And Goldman estimates the UK economy is already around 6% smaller than its counterfactual path since the 2016 referendum.
Non wonder the debate is changing. The further Britain moves back towards Europe, the larger the potential economic dividend.
Brexit was sold as a growth strategy, but now 10 years later, the growth strategy is undoing Brexit asap.

Sagal isn't in the same Party as me but I welcome her to the House of Commons and stand with her against the vile, sexist, racist and Islamophobic abuse she's been receiving in recent weeks. @Sagal_AW

This video is extraordinary to watch again now.
In 2019, @JMPSimor explained to @mrjamesob the constitutional paradox at the heart of Brexit: the referendum was advisory, so the courts would not quash the result, even though the legal challenge argued it had been tainted by proven unlawful campaigning. She told @LBC that, had the referendum been legally binding, the result could have been set aside.
So Britain was left with this absurd position:
The referendum was not legally binding enough to be invalidated but it was treated politically as binding enough to take us out of the European Union.
And that was not the only unresolved constitutional issue.
My own 2018 judicial review, Webster v Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, challenged the missing Article 50(1) decision, the lawful decision to withdraw that had to precede notification. Parliament expressly authorised notification under Article 50(2), but never expressly enacted that antecedent decision.
The courts refused permission in both cases.
Now we are being told by the Prime Minister @andyburnham that Russia interfered in the 2016 referendum. This changes the context again.
It does not automatically undo Brexit. But it makes one thing impossible to avoid:
Britain needs a statutory public inquiry into the referendum, the intelligence, and the Article 50 decision-making process.
We need documents. Witnesses under oath. The Cabinet record. The intelligence assessments. The legal trail.
Because ten years on, the question is no longer simply whether Brexit was right or wrong. It is whether the British public and Parliament were ever told the full truth about how it happened.

As well as being a politician and highly successful novelist, don't forget Jeffrey Archer was a pretty nasty fraudster - like his father. In short, he was a crook. Many broadcasters - some who never dared ask him any tough questions - will gloss over that today.

Who cares where someone's great grandparents came from.

Another terrible tragedy in the Channel & none of the 3 dead are 'fighting age men.' Two 30 year old women and a 10 year old child, gone because they sought a better life in a wealthy country that is incapable of managing a humane system of asylum applications & effectively forces desperate people onto unsafe vessels run by crooks. Rather than outrage about migrants, we should feel deep shame about our handling of this. Of course, such comments set me up for vile abuse, no matter, I'm guided by good people like Pope Leo, not ill-informed hate.
Ash Sarkar: “There are mobs of men styling themselves as paramilitaries & you’ve had more to say about refugees than racism…This is small penis behaviour. You guys are just saying well, it’s about the small boats - well maybe it’s about the racism & the thuggery”
