From Screen Time to Human Flourishing: Are We Asking the Right Question? Every generation has wrestled with a new technology. Calculators would undermine math skills. Computers would replace teachers. The internet would destroy attention spans. Smartphones brought a new, and legitimate, set of concerns. Today, it’s AI. The concerns about screen time, smartphones, student well-being, academic integrity and AI are real. Guardrails matter. But history suggests that banning technology alone has never been enough to prepare young people for the future. Perhaps we need to ask a different question. Instead of simply asking, “How much screen time?” we should also ask: “What are students doing with that time?” Are they passively consuming, or creating, collaborating, solving problems and learning? And as AI becomes increasingly capable, education has an even greater responsibility to nurture the distinctly human capabilities AI cannot replace: curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, empathy, ethical judgment, resilience, collaboration and human connection. That is the conversation we will tackle head-on at the 17th Canadian EdTech Leadership Summit. Under our theme, “Leading with AI for Good: Advancing Human Flourishing,” education leaders, researchers and innovators will explore how we can move beyond the false choice between embracing technology and protecting humanity.
