We adults always talk about what youth need in sport. Here is an opportunity to listen to 3 teens who all make an impact in this space. Very exciting Brandon @MindDesignSport and two local Adelaide girls.

Positive self talk can often inspire positive performance. If you tell yourself you will lose, you prepare for failure. However, when you tell yourself that winning is a clear possibility, you set yourself up for success. Simple yet effective, this boosts confidence/performance.

Design a training program or join a club such that your training mimics race-like conditions. This type of simulation with conditions that you will be facing during the competition is a very effective way of practice.
Focus on the task and not the outcome, think about the present and not the finish. This will help you in relaxing and enjoying the event instead of worrying about it and having negative thoughts. If you have negative thoughts, focus on your breathing.

A huge part of many competitive sports is anger; when emotions run high and our physical selves become tired/agitated, it is impossible for us not to become frustrated. Redirecting this anger to the sport instead of wasting it, however, is an essential to maximize performance.

As we roll into Summer, a rather obvious yet neglected tip is to wear sunscreen. While a burn may eventually go away, its impact on our body temperature and energy levels leads to a stark decrease in performance ability. Take care of your body!

An interesting approach to sports psychology is to consider not what helps but what hurts. One key trait I’ve noticed plays likely the most fundamental role in performance is confidence (not to be mistaken with arrogance). Without it, even the greatest athletes fail to succeed.

At times when our physical and mental selves are exhausted, we must draw from an alternative source of energy. The beauty of the majority of sports is that they are TEAM-based. Feed off of each other’s energy! Sometimes that one extra shout or high five is all you need to go on.
