Six cameras. In a classroom. Pointed at teenagers. That is what Prince Harry brought to Ninestiles Academy in Birmingham last week for a visit that was, on paper, a good idea: Invictus, prosthetics, engineering, a carbon-fibre leg on the table, the sort of thing that can genuinely change what a fifteen-year-old thinks is possible. And then the crew walked in behind him. One of the students said what all of them were thinking, on a video now everywhere: there are six cameras in my face. He added two words the school will not have enjoyed. Another pupil, before the Duke entered, reportedly asked who Prince Harry was. In the footage the kids sit around the table, barely looking up, while he gestures at them. Nobody is laughing. They just want the lesson back. Now remember who he is. This is the man who has told us, in a book, on Oprah, on Netflix, in a courtroom, in speech after speech, what cameras did to him as a boy. Who walked behind his mother's coffin at twelve with the lenses on his face and has, quite reasonably, never forgotten it. Who left the country, he said, to protect his children from exactly this. Whose children's faces are hidden from every camera on earth except the one his wife points at them for Instagram. Who last week stood on a stage in New York and warned the world about technology that finds young people, hooks them and exploits them. And then he walked into a school full of other people's children with six cameras, because a visit without cameras is a visit without content, and content is the only thing that still gets him a headline. That is the tell. The crowds have thinned. The book is three years old. The Netflix numbers are what they are. A school in Birmingham does not draw the attention it used to unless it's filmed, so it was filmed, and the children who are supposed to be the point of the exercise became the set. He knows better than anyone alive what it feels like to have a lens pushed into your face at an age when you cannot say no. A boy in Birmingham said no anyway. Good for him. Somebody had to.
