It’s not set in stone, but it is a concrete idea that’ll affect our future physicians who become federal student loan borrowers starting this July.
Current borrowers unaffected.
But if this happens, it’ll have a huge impact on med students’ career decisions.

Outside of outright gutting PSLF, the proposal of “Removing medical residency training as eligible employment under PSLF” would instrumentally be one of the most destructive policies for the financial well-being of current and prospective physicians. What are we doing??
Reading the Workforce and Education Committee draft on education changes. Many thoughts to come, but here are some bullet points:
- Changes to how COA is calculated
- New Loan Limits
- Ending PLUS Loans (Grad and Parent)
- Changing repayment plans after July 1, 2026
- Eliminating economic hardship and unemployment deferment and forbearance
- Removing medical residency training as eligible employment under PSLF
- Paying student loan serivcers more money to deal with all the changes
- Eliminating the ability to be a 'Pellionaire'
- Adding a Workforce Pell Grant
