Quite enjoy getting this sort of alert. An asteroid has just been discovered before it’ll hit Earth! It’ll enter the atmosphere just northwest of Australia. (Don’t worry: it’s ~1m long, so it’ll just make a cool, brief fireball. We aren’t all about to die.)

"Digging Below The Death Zone: The Underground War in Ukraine," my latest with @SapperGeologist discussing how the evolution of underground environments have exploded/advanced as the surface has become so lethal. A trend that many are still not ready for. mwi.westpoint.edu/digging-be…

It was either a disingenuous question or a grossly ignorant one. @SecWar It is NOT a war crime to target bridges, power infrastructure, telecommunications networks, or other infrastructure if they constitute lawful military objectives. The law of armed conflict does not prohibit attacks simply because an object is also used by civilians. The legal question is whether the object makes an effective contribution to military action and whether the attack complies with military necessity, distinction, proportionality, and feasible precautions. Bridges, electrical infrastructure, telecommunications systems, transportation networks, and other infrastructure have been targeted in many modern wars, including Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, Libya, and others. The U.S. military has long recognized that such infrastructure can constitute lawful military objectives when it contributes to an enemy's military operations or warfighting capacity. That does not mean every strike against infrastructure is lawful. Each attack must be assessed based on the facts and the requirements of the law of armed conflict. But to suggest that targeting bridges, electrical infrastructure, or telecommunications assets is inherently a war crime reflects either a gross misunderstanding of the law of war or an unprofessional misrepresentation of it.
REPORTER: "If the response is in hitting bridges, electrical infrastructure, how would that not be a war crime?” @SECWAR "That's precisely the kind of disingenuous question that I'm used to from the media, impugning the motives of the folks on our side who are incredibly professional and incredibly effective!"

Pictured; A MEXE Shelter was a prefabricated sectional structure and covering design for observation, command, and regimental aid posts. A Smart design, but definitely 'of its time'

In short, some is the same, i.e. ophiolites (ancient seabed mixed with igneous rocks) , but the Zagros mountains (!) are largely recent sedimentary sequences. In terms of an operating environment, it's incredibly complex. macrostrat.org/map/#x=57.275… - good interactive #geology map

In July 1917 the Italians dug and loaded two 2-tonne mines under Monte Rosso. Before they had a chance to blow them, Austrian tunnellers broke into the blast chambers and stole all the Italian explosives. The Austrians later used those explosives to blow up the Italian tunnels.

During WW2, the comparative scale of many places was still beyond the scope of our imagination. Had to be one of the reasons why we went to war. London: population in 1943? About 8.5m people. Guadalcanal: number of men fighting for it? 100,000. (60k US , 31.4k Japanese)

For a start, there's Guadalcanal. Too much to tell you, and we're always tempted to digress and actually talk about the war, not the NEWS of the war - because oh boy - is there a lot to cover now. 🗞️ linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar

Some brilliant work by the @HQARRC sustainment teams to get our HQ set-up in place. Great to see the use of a broad range of #infrastructure to increase #protection and #resilience. @SpencerGuard @Stu_Lyle @JaysonGeroux
This October, HQ ARRC will join NATO Allies for Exercise Avenger Triad 25, a key U.S.-led command post exercise held alongside NATO’s Steadfast Duel. Together, these exercises focus on refining NATO’s defence plans and integrating command systems. Troops from across Europe and the US will take part in simulated large-scale combat operations, building on lessons learned from previous exercises to strengthen NATO’s collective readiness. #WeAreNATO

Interesting post here, another example of Russian exploitation of #SubT #infrastructure. Worth noting the use of the trolley to facilitate equipment and personnel transfer. @RichemondBarak @Proud_Sappers @MilGeoscience @urbanwarfareins Thanks @Stu_Lyle for flagging this one 👍🏻
Russia released this video showing troops moving through a pipeline. The original upload suggests it's in the Pokrovsk direction.
