Chaz Cave (‘29, GA) belts this into LF for a RBI 3B. Keeps the hands tight and whips the barrel thru w/ a sl uphill bat plane. Quick hands and feel to impact. #WWBAWorlds @PG_Georgia

🚨 MLB DRAFT PROPOSAL – WHAT IT MEANS FOR COLLEGE BASEBALL RECRUITING 🚨
MLB just dropped a major proposal to the Players Association on the amateur draft. Key pieces:
• High school players would no longer be draft-eligible starting with the 2028 draft.
• Most college players become eligible after their sophomore year (age 20 by Sept 1).
• Domestic draft shrinks to 12 rounds with a significantly smaller bonus pool.
• New international draft structure coming as well.
Bottom line for families and student-athletes: College baseball just became even more central to the development path.
What this changes in recruiting:
1. More elite HS talent coming to campus
Top high school prospects who previously had a realistic shot at signing pro out of high school will now go the college route (or have to). This increases the overall talent level and competition for roster spots across D1, D2, D3, and JUCO.
2. Earlier departures for top college players
Star sophomores can now leave for the draft. Expect more roster turnover after two years and continued (or increased) activity in the transfer portal as teams reload.
3. Longer window for most players
The majority of drafted players will still come through college. For the vast majority of families, the realistic path to pro ball runs through 2–4 years of college development, academics, and NIL opportunities.
4. Recruiting strategy adjustments
• College coaches will likely lean harder into HS commits knowing many will stay at least through their sophomore year.
• HS families need to prioritize the right academic and developmental fit even more — because the college experience just got longer and more important for most.
• “Pro or bust” mentalities become even riskier.
MLB’s stated goal is to strengthen college baseball as the primary development system. Whether you agree with every detail or not, the direction is clear: college is where the majority of future big leaguers are being made.
My advice to families right now:
Focus on the process we’ve always talked about — academics first, right school fit, consistent development, and relationships with coaches. These proposed changes don’t change the fundamentals; they just make getting the college piece right even more critical.
What are your thoughts? How do you see this affecting your son’s recruiting timeline or school list?
