Oh dear. This is a dangerously undercooked proposal.
1. It overlooks history. It chillingly echoes Dean Acheson in Jan 1950 declaring US interests didn’t reach beyond Japan and thus boosting DPRK confidence to launch the Korean War.
2. It presents a surprisingly naive view of great power dynamics, suggesting PRC ambitions would not be further stimulated by such a back down.
3. It cavalierly dismisses the risk of nuclear proliferation.
4. It entirely overlooks security ties with Thailand and Singapore.
5. It underestimates the deterrent and stabilising effect of the US forward presence and the enduring restraint on PRC/PLA thinking relating to the significance of the Malacca dilemma.
6. It gravely underestimates the knock on negative effects on American power and influence globally from such a diminution in its footprint and assurances. What about Indonesia at the maritime fulcrum and gateway between the Indian and Pacific Oceans?
7. It naively assumes the proposed posture would have a net stabilizing effect on global markets and geopolitics.
Thats just what springs to mind at first reading. I shake my head...
Bombshell report from @jekavanagh that has the Japanese strategic community buzzing.
The proposal:
— Explicitly say the U.S. will not defend Taiwan
— End defense treaties with Japan, South Korea, the Philippines and Australia
— Drastically reduce U.S. forces in Asia
My take: Retreating to the second island chain does not preserve the balance of power more cheaply. It changes the balance of power.
