His complaints became a recurring part of her story, while Meghan was cast as the ungrateful daughter. The press didn’t just give him a platform. Good Morning Britain paid him for an interview. Channel 5 paid him for a documentary. He also received money for staged paparazzi photos before the wedding. Some outlets were buying his story while using it to keep the family feud in the headlines. And somehow the staged photos mattered less than the daughter who stopped speaking to him. Now Thomas faces serious allegations. His son says he found child sexual abuse images at their father’s former home. Thomas denies possessing them, and Philippine authorities say they are investigating. The allegations have not been proven. The Sun says it has seen a 2018 letter sent to the Metropolitan Police. Meghan says the letter was shared with her and that she was assured the allegations were being investigated. The Met says it is checking how the letter was handled. That’s where the investigative reporting should be focused: What happened to the letter? Was it passed on? Who gave Meghan those assurances? Instead, some of the media are asking what Meghan knew and why she didn’t tell the public. She says she trusted that authorities were investigating. She was not responsible for making a private letter public or conducting an investigation herself. If the authorities failed to act, hold them accountable. Don’t make Meghan answer for their decisions. And the press’s old framing of her family deserves scrutiny too. Thomas was repeatedly presented as the parent who made Meghan who she was, while Doria Ragland the Black mother who helped raise her was pushed to the edges of the story. That racial dimension is hard to ignore: the white father cast as the sympathetic figure, the Black mother barely mentioned, Meghan made into the problem. Maybe if the press had spent less time paying Thomas to air grievances about his daughter, it would have more credibility now when it calls itself investigative journalism. Instead, it helped turn him into a public character and now that the story has taken a darker turn, it wants Meghan to answer for it. You paid him. You put him on television.
