ALT The proposed cancellation of the A46 Newark Bypass and A38 Derby Junctions is a significant setback for the Midlands, not simply to transport investment, but to the wider growth ambitions in the region. Earlier this week, MC wrote to Govt setting out the unanimous position of our Mayors and Leaders – these schemes should be protected and their significant growth potential retained. These are not simply road schemes, they are important enabling infrastructure supporting housing, employment, advanced manufacturing, defence and strategic connectivity across the Midlands. The A46 schemes alone are currently associated with more than 77,000 homes and over 100 hectares of employment land. As Govt considers next steps, we want to work constructively with Govt, East Midlands Combined County Authority and the wider Midlands partnership to ensure there is a credible and deliverable way forward that avoids losing the investment, momentum and opportunities associated with these schemes.

ALT Quote from Maria Machancoses, Chief Executive of Midlands Connect: “The announcement that Government will consult on removing the A46 Newark Bypass and A38 Derby Junctions from the third Road Investment Strategy is deeply disappointing. “Only two months ago, these schemes were confirmed following years of collaborative work between Government, National Highways, local authorities and Midlands Connect. “They are not simply road projects, they are nationally significant investments unlocking housing, business growth and freight and supply chains across the Midlands and beyond. “We will work closely with our partners to present robust evidence and engage constructively during the consultation. We remain focused on making the strongest possible case for these vital investments.”
