Presidents increasingly use emergency powers for routine policymaking. Today, 52 emergencies unlock 100+ statutory powers, while Congress has terminated just one in 50 years. Emergency powers were meant for genuine crises, not unchecked presidential power, writes Cato's Molly Nixon. ow.ly/oTaP50ZO4F1

Quick trade balance update: 1) Trade deficits have not been increasing 2) Trump tariffs caused the biggest trade deficit increase in history and then the biggest decrease in history (circled part), but no long-term reduction in trade deficits 3) The US trade deficit is now higher (as of August) than the trend going back to 2010 (red line)

He’s going to get that crackpot socialist senate candidate in Michigan elected, isn’t he? Good job MAGA.

Trump: "We don't need their product. So if we cut off trade with that country, we just made $40 billion. You do a few countries like that, and we become a big money machine." 🙃

Anyone else remember when the Senate Finance Committee said any change to the de minimis tariff exemption that helped low-income families and allowed @CBP to better use its resources would require congressional approval? Well, here's a reminder!

The minute the blockade lifts, the President loses leverage. The second there's a license to sell oil, certainly without an escrow account requirement, he loses more. The moment Iran can tap frozen accounts to pay off debts, he loses more. Internalize the failure of the MOU.

Iran will never follow through on ending nuclear production nor giving up its new found leverage in the Strait of Hormuz. They are attempting to play us….again. The only way to stop them is to eliminate their avenues of funding. Period.
Stop debating the Islamist regime’s intentions. They’re clear: they want to kill all of us. Focus on capability. Its nuclear and war-making capabilities have been severely degraded. Now the Trump administration must finish the job and eliminate them.

Jack Keane is right
Gen. Jack Keane just dropped a truth bomb this morning on FOX: Our intelligence services know the Pakistani and Qatari mediators “are compromised because they favor Iran at the expense of the United States.” They have misled the Trump administration about Tehran’s real intentions. Then Keane went after Saudi Arabia. He cited four instances of Saudi influence pulling the president back from wider military action. When the U.S. was ready to open the Strait forcibly, the Saudis denied us their airbase and airspace and actively discouraged the operation — even though they "knew nothing about the details of that operation, nor are they qualified to make that kind of an assumption." Keane's blunt assessment? They "are not willing to sacrifice" (causalities and damage to their oil reserves) "to rid the Middle East region of Iran's aggression. . . . They're willing for us to make that sacrifice for sure. They're willing for Israel to make that sacrifice for sure." This is the thanks America gets for putting the Kingdom under a nuclear and security umbrella since World War II. Keane’s bottom line: “I think it is shameful that they lack the spine to stand up for their people and the region.” Full 3+ minute clip. Must watch.👇

I’m skeptical any sort of real deal between Iran and the U.S. will ever be agreed upon. It sounds like the current pause against Iran is at the request of the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, not because peace is breaking out.

This raises the obvious question of why he’s trying to make a deal with them.

This is why negotiations, which has been a dance for the past 47 years, are fruitless: Iran’s regime will never have talks in good faith. It’s just waiting and rearming.
The Hormuz Report
@HormuzReportAug 3
BREAKING: Iran has directly rejected Donald Trump's claim that U.S.-Iran talks will begin Monday, saying no talks of any kind with Washington are taking place, according to Tasnim, citing Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei. Baghaei said Iran's only ongoing discussions are with Oman and relate solely to a new temporary shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz, stressing this does not mean the Strait is reopening as long as what Iran describes as U.S. aggression continues. Iranian officials portrayed Trump's announcement as an attempt to influence market sentiment and profit from insider trading, insisting Tehran's position has not changed: no U.S. talks and no reopening of the Strait.

I’ve Tweeted about this a dozen times but it is really remarkable. Trump warns that he’s going to wage the largest attack campaign since World War 2 and then at the eleventh hour gets a phone call from the Saudi Kingdom so immediately calls it off with Iran’s leaders mocking us.

Iran has unveiled another propaganda billboard depicting First Lady Melania Trump and Barron Trump as bloodied corpses, alongside Ivanka Trump, with the word "KILLED" splashed across their bodies and the message: "Hey, terrorist! Get ready to die." The billboard, erected above a highway in Tehran, is the latest in a series of threats targeting President Trump and his family. Earlier displays in the Iranian capital showed Trump, Melania, Barron and the president's other children above coffins draped in American flags, while another billboard depicted Trump's own corpse alongside the words "We Kill Trump." The murals were created by the Owj Arts and Media Organization, which is linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Seriously Here we go again. I get the president wants Iran to act logically and wants peace. There’s just no real sign that’s happening with the Iranians, and the gulf states have become more worried about the here and now rather than their future with an empowered Iran. Terrorists who believe they should rule the region and the world don’t stop until they are stopped. 9/11, 3000 dead, NY and Washington attacked happened and can happen again. The Iranians used the Trump playbook on Trump — they had no leverage and so they created it by seizing the Strait and then using that to bargain. They killed 40,000 of their own. Then they started attacking their neighbors. And the neighbors got scared. And instead of the IRGC being afraid to even leave their house as they were in March, starting in April they won ceasefires, security and faux negotiations. We were beginning to reverse that with the blockade and mounting air strikes only to once again call a halt just as momentum was building. Every time things start to go South for the Iranians, they make a 3 am call to the White House. Unfortunately we keep answering it.
