Ethereum researcher Justin Drake has urged the industry to prepare for “bunker mode” by moving funds to addresses whose public keys have not been exposed. He warns that AI-driven mathematical breakthroughs could make attacks on ECDSA practical before quantum computers arrive, though other experts say a months-long timeline is unsubstantiated and warn against alarmist migration efforts.
Glassnode researcher Rafael estimates that 6.26 million BTC, or 31.2% of issued supply, has exposed public keys. About 4.33 million BTC is exposed through address reuse, while another 1.94 million BTC is directly visible because of its script type, including early P2PK and Taproot outputs.
Why it matters: Moving funds to addresses whose public keys remain hidden can reduce current exposure, but it cannot replace a broader cryptographic upgrade. Public keys will still be revealed when those funds are spent.
