Windy and warm on Tuesday as this low develops to our west - maximum temperatures look like they may reach the mid-to-high 20s (lower risk), although it'll largely depend on the positioning of the low. If things turn a bit flatter (i.e., the low further east), it'll be cooler.

It could be rather close to a date record - depending on which reading you go off, the record for the 23rd of September is 28.4ºC in Loughborough in 1895. The climate return for Stratfield Turgis lists the readings as 'manifestly unreliable', so I have discarded the 30.6ºC.

Fresher air is arriving, with temperatures settling closer to average London and parts of the southeast hold onto the warmth a little longer, with highs reaching 27-28°C on Friday before turning fresher on Saturday Expect chilly starts, followed by warm afternoons ❄️👉🌡️

Recon just flew into Hurricane Polo and found a pressure of 889.3 mb. This is unbelievable. That makes Polo the SECOND STRONGEST EPAC HURRICANE EVER. Official pressure awaiting dropsonde, but this is a historic, top-tier storm.

Still some way out from the centre of #Polo but NOAA3 has already measured 101kt FL winds with a pressure of "only" 979mb. Using that ratio and a presumed pressure of ~900mb would yield 180-190kt FL winds! Let's see what recon finds next in #Polo!

#ukweather posting hiatus is over😁 1/ Monitoring Wed 23/09 for some squally showers and thunderstorms from the Irish Sea through Wales and into eastern parts of England as moist unstable air is drawn NE ahead of an ESEward advancing cold front. A focus could be across parts of E Mids into East Anglia where dry mid-level air wraps ahead of the front allowing surface heating, and thus instability, to maximise here by noon to promote more robust developments. Main hazard likely to be gusty winds up to 45mph given likely upscale growth of convection into linear multicell clusters.

38.2ºC at Hartpury College updated on the absolute annual maximum UK temperature chart since 1875 - it nudges the linear trend up to +0.16ºC per decade from +0.15ºC. The average absolute annual maximum over the last 10 years is 36.1ºC, genuinely astonishing.
