Today, at the Together Alliance Summit in Manchester, I challenged Andy Burnham's divisive rhetoric about the Green Party and raised concerns about the consequences of his comments endangering local authority leadership coalitions.

It's been a really difficult few weeks after being targeted and doxxed by a far-right account with over 40,000 followers.
But receiving messages like this reminds me why the work we do matters so much.
To know that young Black women are recognising and celebrating the work of people in their own communities, and sharing those stories with the next generation, means more than I can put into words.
A much-needed reminder that, even in the face of hate, our work is making a difference. 🙏🏾

He called his Met Police colleagues ‘batty holes’ and ‘wastemen’. Whilst he’s right in his summation…what did he think the outcome of statements would be?

Today’s vigil at Liverpool John Moores University, organised by LJMU UCU and Stand Up To Racism, was incredibly moving.
I was asked, as LJMU UCU Black Members’ Rep, to host the space as our community came together to remember Professor Jason Arday.
We observed a two-minute silence, shared reflections, and heard about the many ways Jason touched the lives of students, colleagues and people across the wider community. Local artist and activist Tayo Aluko sang movingly during the vigil, before we came together to lay flowers in Jason’s memory.
Some of the most powerful moments for me came through conversations both before and afterwards. I spoke with former students and colleagues who had worked alongside Jason for years, including former students who have gone on to achieve incredible things in their own lives and careers.
I also spoke with facilities colleagues who remembered the everyday moments - Jason stopping to speak with them each evening as they closed the building, taking the time to ask how they were and simply treating people with warmth and kindness.
Outside ofnthe space, local teachers have reached out to share memories of bringing schoolchildren to the old IM Marsh campus and of the impact Jason had on them during those visits.
Those stories say so much.
It is incredibly clear just how highly Jason was regarded, and how deeply loved he was by so many within the LJMU community and beyond.
It was an honour to hold space for those memories today, to listen to such moving tributes, and to stand together as a community in remembrance.
Rest in power, Professor Jason Arday. 🖤

Have you ever heard of Dr Peter Hutchinson, the former Vice-Master of Trinity Hall, Cambridge?
He was accused of sexually harassing 10 students. Despite the allegations, he was allowed to remain in his position under certain restrictions. After breaching those restrictions, he was removed from his role, only to be reappointed two years later. He eventually resigned.
And that’s not it. He also published an erotic fiction book featuring stories about students.

Nathan Cofnas, who launched the witch-hunt against Professor Jason Arday, wrote a blog post arguing that in meritocracy, Black people would largely be absent from prominent positions outside of sports and entertainment.
He claimed that, under such a system, Black people would “disappear from almost all high-profile positions outside of sports and entertainment.”

Re-reading Dr Arday’s resignation statement, reported across the major media outlets:
- He wanted to be present for his family.
- He wanted the relentless media scrutiny to end.
- He thought his resignation would stop the media onslaught so he could heal.
The media did not stop. They published 188 more articles until his death.

As much as I would love to say "forgive them for they know not what they do", they knew exactly what they were doing, for we told them. Repeatedly. In text and audio. On air and off air.
Below was from 03/08.

"When people talk about the need for Black Excellence I counter with an insistence on Black mediocrity: the right for black people to be as average, flawed, compromised & mistaken as any other group of people. The right, ultimately, to be human." R.I.P. Jason Arday

Jason Arday was hounded by the British media to death.
188 articles in 9 days.
249 articles in 22 days.
Over plagiarism controversy.
Nathan Cofnas—a sacked Cambridge race-theorist—started the allegations.
As someone who has experienced a smear campaign, I can tell you with full certainty that it can take you into total darkness.
They forget they are dealing with a human being. They forget it is someone's entire life they are tearing apart.
This is what sinister journalism does.
Shame on the British media.

We send our thoughts and solidarity to the family and loved ones of #JasonArday.
The right wing press and the far right have orchestrated a racist witch hunt which has produced the most tragic result.
🕯️ Join our vigil for Jason on Monday
Why was Peter Mandelson not deemed a major public-interest issue? He came back from what should have been two career-ending scandals, toured TV studios and wrote op-eds. Serious scrutiny only came at the very end.
Jason Arday, meanwhile, was relentlessly hounded by the press.

I wonder if The Times wrote this Jason Arday obituary while they, and much of the right-wing media, were piling on him relentlessly over the past three weeks.
The speed with which public humiliation becomes respectful obituary is quite something.
