On 6th September 1651, the fugitive Charles II hid in an oak tree at Boscobel, Shropshire, as Parliamentarian soldiers searched the surrounding countryside. Just three days earlier he had been defeated at the Battle of Worcester. Charles spent much of the day concealed in the tree with Royalist officer William Careless before continuing his escape across England. The tree became famous as the Royal Oak. Nine years later, Charles returned to England as King 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

A truly memorable evening at Worcester's Bishop’s Palace, marking the 375th anniversary of the Battle of Worcester. A wonderful occasion bringing together history, and remembrance. A fitting tribute to one of the most significant events in our nation’s history.

#otd 1651 #CharlesII nearly fell out of a tree.🌳 He was hiding to avoid almost certain execution, yet he'd just removed his armour in battle & said he wanted to die. What do we know of his #mentalhealth? My book explains a bit.📘 #history #war #royals👑 amazon.co.uk/Charles-II-Crad…
