Astronauts in distress on their way home are protected by an international treaty.
Multiple countries are obliged to come to their aid.
People caught in disasters on Earth?
No equivalent global protection.
That's Earth's Missing Treaty.
As we speak, countries are discussing a new global agreement.

In my work, I meet people facing crises they did not choose. I also see extraordinary acts of kindness, solidarity and compassion every day.
That's what #IFRCLightInTheDarkness is about: hope, humanity and peaceful lives for all.
I invite Itonde Kakoma @ikakoma1, Elhadj As Sy @Elhadj_As_Sy, Amal Emam @amalemam, Dyanne Marenco González @DyanneMarenco and Prof. Sandeep Waslekar @sundeepwaslekar to share what peace means to them.
Disasters leave no time to negotiate how help arrives.
As devastating floods in Nepal show, damaged infrastructure and difficult access can make reaching people in need an immense challenge.
If these things can be defined before a disaster happens, governments and humanitarian organizations can focus on the response. -@jagan_chapagain, @IFRC Secretary General
That is why the IFRC is calling for Earth’s Missing Treaty: a global disaster treaty to strengthen preparedness, protect people most at risk and establish clear rules for humanitarian assistance to cross borders.
We must act before the next disaster strikes.

I cannot stress this enough: humanitarian personnel, facilities and supplies must be respected and protected at all times.
On 23 August, an attack in Kherson caused a fire at a Ukrainian Red Cross @RedCrossUkraine warehouse, destroying essential humanitarian supplies intended for the winter. Medical supplies, blankets, hygiene kits, water and winter preparedness materials that could have supported thousands of people during the colder months were lost.
Despite the damage, our IFRC network teams continue assisting communities affected by the conflict.
Our latest IFRC Pretoria Cluster newsletter is out!

Met International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Secretary-General Jagan Chapagain at State House Nairobi. Thanked the organisation for continued humanitarian interventions in Kenya and across the region.
Assured Mr Chapagain of Kenya’s commitment to continue working with the Red Cross to strengthen the response to emergencies across our region.
I also briefed him on Kenya’s transformation agenda, especially in water harvesting, water storage and irrigation, through the National Infrastructure Fund. This will boost production and strengthen our country's food security.

More than 307 million people across Africa experienced hunger in 2024. Together, we must move beyond managing crises and invest in durable, locally led solutions.
Through the Food Security Resilience Platform and the IFRC Pan-African Zero Hunger Initiative, we aim to help 60 million people become more resilient and food secure by 2030.
Together with His Majesty, we are committed to championing African-led solutions.
Profoundly honoured to be welcomed by Lesotho’s Honourable Minister of Health and presented with a traditional Mokorotlo hat, a cherished symbol of the country’s rich heritage.
An evening of meaningful conversations & warm laughter. 🇱🇸
Months after floods devastated Mpumalanga, the @RedcrossSa, supported by @IFRCAfrica Pretoria CCD, is still standing with affected communities, providing preparedness & SGBV education, and relief items. Recovery doesn't end when the water recedes - it begins
