My personal truth as a clinical psychologist, for today (August 31, 2026): Language shapes experience.
Words don’t just describe what we feel. They help organize what we believe is possible.
“I’m a failure” closes a door.
“I failed at this” leaves it open.
“I’m broken” sounds permanent.
“I’m hurting” allows for healing.
“I’m an anxious person” can become an identity.
“I’m feeling anxious lately” makes it a state that can change.
“My marriage is dead” suggests a verdict.
“We’ve lost our connection” suggests something that might be found again.
This matters in therapy. The words therapists use can either harden a problem into an identity or make room for movement.
Good therapeutic language doesn’t deny reality or sugarcoat pain. It describes what is happening without unnecessarily turning what is happening now into who you are forever.
Choose words that tell the truth and still leave the future open.
