"A former Rwandan army sergeant major, who became an outspoken critic of President Paul Kagame, has been found beheaded in neighbouring Uganda. ... His death adds to concerns about the safety of Rwandan dissidents living in exile."

Just when I was about to completely write off the Nobel Committee, they surprise us by finally making a good and courageous decision!
South Africa's Navi Pillay, a former ICC judge, is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for being “instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide are prosecuted.”
Beyond serving on an international tribunal investigating the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, she led a UN panel that determined that Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
So three things stand out:
1. The committee is indirectly endorsing her conclusion that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza - that's huge!
2. The committee awards a former ICC judge when Marco Rubio is working overtime to destroy that court in order to defend Israel
3. And at a time when international law and the UN Charter are under attack from so many directions, they award it to someone who has spent her life building up this crucial infrastructure.
Compare that to the committee's decision last year to grant it to a person who was lobbying Trump to bomb her own country...

I met a Swedish general years ago who told me every time they held wargames, the side playing Russia began by seizing Gotland and installed anti-aircraft missiles to cut off NATO reinforcement of the Baltic states.
TLDR: this 🇩🇪 - 🇸🇪 drill is a very specific thing to practice…
A rapid deployment of German and Swedish forces to Gotland island is being carried out today. Units from 🇸🇪 and 🇩🇪 are rehearsing the swift reinforcement of the strategic island in order to ensure the security of the Baltic Sea.

No one was there taking pictures for the cover of Time Magazine when my army engineering unit was digging mass graves outside Fallujah for all the men and boys the marines killed after refusing to let any males leave the city, then treating everyone who remained as a combatant.
Among the most unforgettable images of the Iraq War is the photo of 1st Sgt. Brad Kasal being helped from Fallujah’s “Hell House” by LCpl Chris Marquez and LCpl Dane Shaffer on November 13, 2004, during the Second Battle of Fallujah.
Blood soaked and still clutching his 9mm Beretta, Kasal became a lasting emblem of sacrifice and the bond between Marines. Inside the house, he had been shot by insurgents 7 times and hit with shrapnel from a grenade blast after he threw himself over a wounded Marine. Gravely wounded and bleeding heavily, he still refused to be pulled out until the rest of his men were accounted for.
Those actions earned 1st Sgt. Brad Kasal the Navy Cross. The picture, and what he did that day, stand as a clear expression of the Marine Corps ethos: courage under fire, loyalty to one another, and the refusal to leave a fellow warrior behind.

The situation in Haiti is terrifying. On Sunday, 150 gunmen swept down on a town to kill, rape, loot, and burn. 22 people were executed in a churchyard. 52 were taken hostage.
Meanwhile, Stephen Miller mockingly says Haiti is safe and ICE is proudly deporting children to danger.
A day after @DHSgov deported 57 Haitians including children, and the agency published a shocking video of #Haitians in chains boarding their deportation flight, Amb. Jennifer Locetta, alternative representative for Special Political Affairs for U.S. @UN tells the Secuirty Council about Kenscoff: "This attack, which follows months of ongoing deadly violence is another reminder of the dire state of Haiti's security crisis."
"For months, terrorists have murdered civilians, terrorized communities, burned homes, and destroyed families. Now they're finally saying the quiet part out loud. By their own public statements, gang coalitions.. to prevent Haitian voters from exercising their rights to elect their representative government in a future election." miamiherald.com/news/nation-…

In just over 4 years, 9 Americans have been killed in the West Bank with 0 accountability. It’s past time we get answers about their deaths & the constant injustices Palestinians face from the Israeli occupation of the West Bank.
I'm introducing a resolution requiring the State Dept to begin to answer these questions & I'll be bringing it to a vote when Congress returns.

My colleague, Athena Rayburn, Executive Director of AIDA, put a simple but legally fundamental proposition before the Security Council today: Resolution 2803 did not create a legal vacuum in Gaza.
The Council may endorse the Board of Peace, but its legality (and success) cannot be measured by its existence. It must be measured against the legal endpoint already determined by the International Court of Justice: an end to Israel’s unlawful presence and realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
Nor can the Board of Peace become a device through which the rights of Palestinians are made subordinate to the requirements of Israel, the occupying Power.
Moreover, Israel cannot lawfully condition impartial relief on political acquiescence, silence or acceptance of its policies, and nor can the Board of course and its US backer.
Article 59 of the Fourth Geneva Convention imposes obligations in relation to relief schemes which are not optional, and cannot be displaced by a new institutional architecture devised under Resolution 2803.
Yet international NGOs have been deregistered, specialist staff denied entry, essential medical and humanitarian items rejected, operational space reduced, and access made dependent upon decisions of the very Power whose conduct humanitarian organizations are required to scrutinize.
There is a larger constitutional point too. In adopting Resolution 2803, the Security Council did not divest itself of its primary responsibility to ensure peace and human security. Still less did it suspend peremptory norms of international law.
In other words, delegation is not abdication.
If the Council is not certain of the facts in Gaza, including the futility of the Board of Peace in reversing Israeli wrongs, it has powers of inquiry.
Athena’s final request was therefore both practical and juridical: go to Gaza, urgently.
See the facts. Hear directly from Palestinians and humanitarian actors working with them. Then discharge the responsibilities the Charter places upon you.

Citizenship used to mean something more than it means now
ICE violently detain yet another U.S. citizen—this time a minor child.
Family came to pick up the father's car after he was arrested.
Assumed son would be safe—because an American citizen with drivers license.
"I'm a minor," he tells agents.
"He's a minor!" witnesses join in.
Agents grab the 17 year old's hair and try to throw him to the ground.
Then slam him repeatedly against his father's truck—that he had come to retrieve in the first place.
Incident occurred in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas.

Nine years after Myanmar’s military tried to erase the Rohingya from Rakhine, justice is still overdue.
Our @ocelliproject documented, preserved and open sourced that evidence, where we analysed 600+ sites and hand-counted 38,000+ destroyed buildings.
Just over five years ago Myanmar's military waged a violent campaign against the Rohingya in northern Rakhine.
This thread shows how @KayleighRuiter & the team documented 38,000+ buildings destroyed during that campaign. 👇
