Persuasion isn't about saying more. It's about understanding what moves people to act. Chris Myers revisits Cialdini's seven principles and why they still matter in public affairs. See why the framework still holds up. dcigroup.com/cialdini-7-prin…

Unfortunately, the weather may have disrupted parts of the @Freedom250 celebration, but we were grateful to open the beautiful @USDA building to provide shelter. And then this happened… these incredible patriots spontaneously broke into the National Anthem.🇺🇸 I love my country.

A HISTORY OF PRESIDENTIAL INVESTIGATIONS INTO PRICE MANIPULATION BY THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY DATING BACK TO 2000. In this week's "The More You Know" series.... 2000 President Bill Clinton: Responding to complaints about high prices in the Midwest, the Clinton Administration’s FTC investigated the industry for examples of price manipulation. They found no industry-wide efforts, but did find a few smaller companies engaged in “profit-maximizing practices.” The main causes of the price spike were difficulties in following stringent RFG fuel standards and errors in predicting oil supply by refiners. No examples of price-gouging by the wider industry were found. ftc.gov/news-events/news/pre… 2006 President George W. Bush: In response to gas price increases Post-Katrina, Bush’s FTC investigated whether prices were being “artificially manipulated by reducing refinery capacity or by any other form of market manipulation or price gouging practices.” The FTC found no instances of illegal price manipulation; factors such as regional and local market trends explained the firms’ prices in nearly every case. To go even further, the FTC stated that federal legislation on price-gouging would be likely “difficult to enforce and create more problems for consumers than it would solve.” ftc.gov/news-events/news/pre… 2011 President Barack Obama President Obama created the Oil and Gas Price Fraud Working Group in tandem with his DOJ, FTC, CFTC, Treasury, and allied State Attorney Generals to investigate broader oil market behavior. A report issued by the FTC concluded that worldwide crude prices are the main driver of what Americans pay at the pump. ftc.gov/news-events/news/pre… 2021 President Joe Biden President Biden sent a letter to the FTC to investigate our industry heavily for “illegal conduct.” They did not find evidence sufficient to back Biden’s claims, and then instead pivoted to company mergers, where in 2024, they barred Pioneer CEO Scott Sheffield from joining Exxon’s Board. ftc.gov/news-events/news/pre… 2026 President Donald Trump On June 24th, Trump instructed his DOJ to investigate four SuperMajors for price gouging coming off the Strait of Hormuz reopening and falling crude oil and gasoline prices. We will all wait to learn what Trump DOJ finds but if history is any measure..... reuters.com/business/energy/…

What a remarkable outcome: the world's largest ever oil supply disruption failed to create a major energy crisis. The IEA said 2026 shock was worst than 1973, 1979 and 2022 together. And yet, the cost of oil, natural gas, electricity and coal never surpassed the previous peaks.

One of the greatest American CEOs of all time. RIP Lee Raymond. 🇺🇸
Lee Raymond, the oil executive who created Exxon Mobil via a mega-merger in 1998 and for many years fought global efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, has died. He was 87. Raymond ran Exxon from 1993, and negotiated the merger deal with Mobil CEO Lucio A. Noto, emerging as CEO of the combined entity. Exxon Mobil soon after became the world’s largest publicly traded company as oil prices surged.

We don’t look back on policy proposals enough to assess if those adopted or those rejected would have achieved their aims. The Waxman-Markey bill of 2009 (for example) would have been a direct hit on the US economy & not reduced GHG emissions as much as greater natural gas (vs. coal) use did. The job of government policy offices - accelerated and easier today with AI - should make this analysis a priority for better policy moving forward!
20 years ago, An Inconvenient Truth put climate change at the center of global debate, shaping politics, influencing leaders, and inspiring a generation of activists. Two decades later, we can assess not just its impact, but its accuracy. Many of the film’s most alarming predictions did not materialize, while many of the policies it inspired have proven costly and ineffective. The lesson? Panic is a poor guide for public policy. Focusing on innovation, adaptation, and economic development can do far more to help both people and the climate—at a fraction of the cost. financialpost.com/opinion/bj…

Capital Weather Gang, the weather blog that has been a part of the Washington Post for almost 20 years, is becoming an independent site and rebranding as Capital Weather. Per a note to WaPo staff today, the site will still contribute to WaPo during major weather events.
Really magnificent weather today (Friday)! Temps in 70s Low humidity We have several more days like it, including amazing weekend weather. This is both awesome and not great. Why awesome? The sunshine is nice after all of the recent gloom. Plus, we know big time heat and humidity can't be too far away. Temps in the 70s and low 80s at this time of year are a win. Why not great?: No meaningful rain in the near-term forecast. We've still got a serious drought.
