No drug can fully replicate the benefits of regular exercise, particularly for our patients with cancer. The physiologic response to a five mile run is so complex it spans nearly every sector of biology, from immunology to metabolism to gut microbial composition & beyond. That said, many patients may not be able to participate in exercise interventions, either due to lack of access, advanced disease, or comorbidities. Out this week in @exo_btcell, we argue that the study of exercise in cancer bearing hosts is beneficial not only to help patients exercise safely, but also for the discovery of novel approaches to cancer therapy (i.e. FMT, myokine activation, circulating metabolites). As we tease out elements of the response to aerobic exercise and how they affect tumor biology across cancer types, there is opportunity for identification of therapeutic interventions that can be given to even our most vulnerable patients.
