“I’m not a lawyer, but I represented my mother in court in front of a judge”
Man is this the week for UPL hypotheticals come to life.

Norman Finkelstein talks about the mess that Noam Chomsky got into with his second wife, Epstein.
Confirmation of what was already known, but it is pretty upsetting to hear it from someone who knew Chomsky for >40 years.
There's actually an interesting 1st Amendment issue behind the "who gets to call themselves 'lawyer.'" Litigated in my state by a guy who had an engineering degree but was not a licensed "Professional Engineer." 1st says he had right to call himself that:

I'm speaking next week at @allthingsopen next week in Raleigh, NC on open source licensing. For the rare few of you who haven't already heard me talk or write on this topic (😉) and you're attending the conference, stop by!

Man. I got a law *degree* and didn’t get to give an address from the Lincoln Memorial!
Today I go to the first graduation ceremony I've been to in a long time.
I graduated high school, left Stanford to build Theranos, got my honorary doctorate, and now walk for the Law Apprenticeship I completed.
The symbolism of doing so for Constitutional law studies while held in a prison, fighting to prove my innocence, is radiating through me today.
There is no greater way I know to protect liberty than to defend our Constitution when it is trampled upon.

Elizabeth Holmes remains incarcerated at Federal Prison Camp Bryan, Texas, with no public graduation ceremony reported. Her fraud conviction was upheld on appeal; the attached image depicts no real event.

Picked this up at my book shop. Liked it; worth the read. Not as bleak as advertised (it’s not Hardy). Dreiseresque, although better written.
Didn’t see it as misogynistic (albeit 2 of 3 female characters are flawed) but one characteristic of the two antagonists *is* problematic.
rereading John Williams' "Stoner" after many years & seeing now that my initial disappointment with this novel was that I'd read it in a context of Faulkner, Nabokov, Ralph Ellison, Bellow etc. (inventive stylists) & not in the early-20th century naturalism tradition (Dreiser, Frank Norris, Sinclair Lewis) of flat summary prose examining individuals like specimens. "Stoner" is a sort of revising of the Biblical Job stuck in a provincial college, dull loveless marriage, stalled career, terrible colleagues, but Stoner is redeemed through his teaching & love of literature. (though the author makes no effort to suggest the excitement of inspired teaching.)
set beside the dazzling stylists, "Stoner" is flat as a sidewalk; as a successor to Sinclair Lewis with a happy ending (of a kind), it is more explicable. the story of Job is encouraging to some, it suggests that others have it worse than you, so rejoice.

Just watched The Odyessy. In IMAX. Decent movie, worth seeing in IMAX.
Experience totally marred by woman with here 9-year old talking, at a conversational level, throughout.
If the movie theater business dies, that’s one reason why. And it should.
Might as well watch at home.
After watching Argentina-Cabo Verde, here are my suggestions, as a 🇺🇸 sports watcher, on how to make these games more exciting:

Just speculating here, but if the US basketball team could have athletes like Folarin Balogun, we’d really dominate.
Zlatan really should have just kung fu kicked rather than verbally responding to Lalas.
