But
Let me learn to shut up and leave people’s marriages alone….
Elina Svitolina says her marriage with Gael Monfils is ending for multiple reasons, it’s not simply about one thing, ‘It's not always possible to explain everything behind such personal & difficult decisions in a single post. And honestly, some things are simply too personal to share publicly’
“I just want to clarity my previous post a little, because I realized that not
everyone, especially my international audience, fully understood what I was trying to say.
In that post, I shared only one of the reasons that influenced my decision and made me reflect on my life and my future. But the truth is, there's so much more to it, and it was never just about one thing.
When you've been living through the reality of war for more than 4.5 years, experiencing so many different situations, emotions, and difficult moments, you naturally start seeing life differently. Your perspective changes, your values and priorities shift, and you begin to understand what you truly want out of life.
At some point, I simply realized that I didn't want to keep living a life where I wasn't truly happy. And believe me, coming to this decision was anything but easy.
I love and respect my husband very much. And I will always love and appreciate him for the person he is. That's exactly why it was so important for me to be honest, both with him and with myself.
It's not always possible to explain everything behind such personal and difficult decisions in a single post.
And honestly, some things are simply too personal to share publicly. That was and is my view on announcing the end of our marriage but as some of you saw, Gael's career ended abruptly after he made the decision to stop based on our situation.
Unfortunately he had many accusations thrown at him and he didn't deserve that, so we jointly released a statement.
I just hope this helps you understand a little better what I was trying to say but please be kind and understanding, this is incredibly tough for us both right now.”

Many endured war, displacement, colonial violence & trauma without allowing experiences to determine their relationships. Yet a celebrated white woman attributes her struggle to wartime experiences, the public is quick to construct a sympathetic narrative around her decision?
One of the best tennis players in the world found out she was pregnant right as Russia invaded her country. This week she announced she's ending her marriage over what that war did to her, and she watched almost all of it from outside Ukraine.
Her name is Elina Svitolina, and she's currently ranked No. 6 in the world. Her husband is the French player Gael Monfils, who's playing the last season of his career right now.
Her statement doesn't blame him at all. She says he held her hand through every bit of it, and she still can't find her way back to herself inside the marriage.
Psychologists have been tracking Ukrainians' mental health since the first months of the invasion, and they keep running into a result that surprises people. The Ukrainians who made it out of the country report worse anxiety and depression than the ones who stayed home and lived through the air raid sirens.
A study of 737 Ukrainian refugees in Poland points at why. Being separated from family still back home made the trauma heavier, and so did the guilt of being safe while the people you love aren't.
Think about what that looks like day to day. If you're in Kyiv when the sirens go off, you go down to the shelter and you text your mom when it's over. If you're in a hotel in Rome, you read the news from home at 2am and then go play a match in front of a packed stadium the next afternoon.
Svitolina has been living the hotel version for four and a half years, while basically serving as her country's most famous athlete.
Within days of the invasion she pledged her prize money to Ukraine's army and humanitarian relief, while her parents and grandmother were still in the country. She had her daughter Skai that October and was back on tour six months later. She won a tournament in Strasbourg while ranked 508th in the world and gave that check to Ukrainian kids, then a few weeks later knocked out the world No. 1 at Wimbledon. In between she was running a foundation and throwing charity galas, and by 2023 she'd helped raise more than €1 million. At one point Monfils told her she needed to slow down.
She finally did in September 2025. She shut her season down early and said she didn't feel like herself, a month after gamblers flooded her with death threats over a loss in Canada.
Then she came back this year and played some of the best tennis of her life. She won Rome by beating three of the top four players in the world back to back, and she's in the top six for the first time in five years. She and Monfils even made the US Open mixed doubles semis together this summer.
If you watched any of those matches, you'd have had no idea she was having the sleepless nights she describes in this statement.
The last part of what she wrote is the one thing she and Monfils are completely on the same page about. The marriage is ending, and they'll both be standing next to Skai for the rest of her life.

“This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to share.
Everyone knows how much Ukraine means to me. What I have rarely spoken about is what the war has done to me inside.
Last year, I told you I needed to step away from the court because I wasn't in the right emotional space. Today, I want to open up a little more. What you didn't see were the sleepless nights, the doubts, and the feeling of slowly losing myself.
Gaël saw all of it. He never let go of my hand. We fought through this together for a long time, with everything we had.
But some battles happen deep inside you, and no amount of love from someone else can win them for you.
With time, I came to understand that I need to find my way back to myself and that I cannot do that within our marriage. It is the hardest truth I have ever had to face and the hardest thing I have ever had to tell the person I love. Gaël listened. He has respected what I need with a strength and grace I will never forget.
Gael has loved me through my greatest joys and my darkest moments, and I have loved him with all my heart. Together, we built a beautiful life, and we were given the most precious gift of all, our daughter, Skai.
Skai will always come first. Our marriage is ending, but our family is not. We will always be her parents, side by side, at every step of her life.
Please know that there is no one to blame here. There are only two people who loved each other deeply and a story that is changing shape.
We ask for your kindness and for the space we need to heal.
Thank you for your love 🤍”
Not undermining the seriousness of the matter but how is “Ukraine War” form part of your divorce?!
I am flabbergasted to say the least!
