We were told democracy was the safeguard. That letting more people vote would naturally produce wiser outcomes and protect against tyranny. What we actually built was a system that hands enormous coercive power to populations who increasingly cannot understand the systems they are now empowered to destroy. Once complexity passes a certain threshold, majority rule stops functioning as consent and starts functioning as a weapon. People who cannot model supply chains, price formation, technological infrastructure, or the tradeoffs required to keep a modern society running are still given the ability to vote for policies that override those systems. They don’t need to understand what they’re voting to break. They only need to feel that something is wrong and that someone else is to blame. That’s the dark part no one wants to say clearly: democracy in a high-complexity environment doesn’t select for competence. It selects for whoever can most effectively weaponize incomprehension. The people who benefit from this aren’t the voters themselves. They’re the ones who learned how to channel mass confusion into political power while the actual machinery of civilization keeps running on the efforts of a shrinking minority who still understand how it works. The founders tried to slow this down. They built a republic with filters precisely because they knew pure majoritarianism in a complicated society would eventually become destructive. We removed most of those filters, expanded the franchise, and then let the explanation layer collapse. Now we’re surprised that the outcomes keep getting worse and the choices keep getting worse. This isn’t a temporary failure of messaging. It’s what happens when you give people the power to compel outcomes in systems they are no longer capable of comprehending.
