I was thinking of how best to write this all day, so here it goes! I want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who supported the subathon over the last 2 weekends: all of my friends, collaborators, mods, subs, followers, raiders, and even those who just came by to hang out during the streams! Thank you all for choosing to spend part of your days with me and keeping me company. I've been insanely blessed to spend these past 2 years with such amazing people. Whether it was teaching you history, playing games, or just making jokes, these past 2 years have filled my heart with such joy. I've had a lot of emotional turmoil in that time, but every time I think about giving up, I always have someone from the community reaching out and getting me excited to come back and make more memories with you all. Getting to create content that I love with people who keep showing up means more to me than you all could ever know, and I hope we'll have several more years ahead of us! We also beat last year's subathon total, so thank you all so much for that! Students, I wanted to talk a bit about the video I uploaded yesterday to Tiktok and Youtube about Rick Rescorla, who is one of the least talked about heroes I can think off. Figured I might as well as drop a link to the video if you wanna watch: youtube.com/shorts/lPKliguCk…. This was one of the videos I've been wanting to make over the last couple of years, I had heard about this Rick from my high school history teacher during my sophomore year and I always thought it was such an insane story that I just had to tell more people about it! I wish I could've added all the cool details but shorts can only be so long. I figured the 25th anniversary of 9/11 might as well be the best time to make it. Maybe I'll make it a full video later? British kid grows up idolizing the US soldiers in his hometown during WW2. Kid joins the British Army and become a paratrooper and serves in an intel unit during the Cyprus Emergency. Leaves England for Rhodesia and becomes a cop for 3 years where he meets an American soldier who becomes his BFF (Daniel J Hill). Friend convinces him to leave Rhodesia and join the US Army. Goes to America, enlists, goes to OCS and airborne school, passes and volunteers for Vietnam. When in Vietnam, serves with Colonel Hal Moore in 1st Cav. Participates in the Battle of Ia Drang, first major battle between the US Army and PAVN. Becomes famous in his unit for singing Cornish folk songs in the middle of battle, gets given the nickname "Hard Core" by his troops. Earns the Silver Star, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, and a Purple Heart. Leaves active duty in 1967, retires in 1990 as a Colonel. Moves to Jersey in 1985 and starts working as corporate security for Dean Witter at the World Trade Center. Sees the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing in Scotland and starts to worry about terror attacks. Hires his old BFF (Dan Hill) to do a terror attack assessment on the WTC (1990). Friend tells him the basement parking garage would be THE perfect place to do a bombing. They write up a report to the Port Authority of New York and tell them they need more guards in the garage. Get absolutely ignored. We'll come back to this later... 1992 comes around. Hal Moore writes a book called "We Were Soldiers Once... and Young" has a picture of Rick on the cover. Rick is described as one of the best platoon leaders ever. Rick never reads the book. Later hears Mel Gibson is turning it into a movie and tells his wife Susan he would never watch the movie because he felt uncomfortable being portrayed as a "war hero". Says "The real heroes are dead". 1993 rolls in and wouldn't you know it a group of terrorists roll a truck into the undermanned garage and set off a bomb only 30 FEET AWAY from where Rick and Dan had predicted it would happen. Rick invites Dan back to be a security consultant on the WTC. Rick then grows out a beard and goes undercover to local mosques because he suspected the attackers were linked to a Muslim terror cell or an Iraqi colonel of engineers. Rick goes around for MONTHS investigating. He'd show up for morning prayer, speaks FLUENT ARABIC (because of course he'd know Arabic fluently), and makes up a story about him being an anti-American sympathizers. He ends up finding out that the attack was likely planned by a radical imam at a mosque in either NY or NJ and passes the info along to authorities. Soon after arrested are made at a Brooklyn mosque. Rick gets diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1994, divorced in 1997, cancer spreads to bone marrow in 1998, but he meets his second wife, Susan, in July of 1998 and marries her in February 1999. During this time, Rick was still working as a well known corporate security manager. Even when Dean Witter merged with Morgan Stanley, Rick stayed on as VP of Security. He'd conduct constant safety checks, hold surprise safety drills regularly, and every 3 months they practiced emergency evacuation, much to the chagrin of his employees. Rick was always worried another terror attack would come and imagined it might likely be through the air. He actually wrote to Morgan Stanley recommending they leave their Manhattan office space in the WTC for a proposed 4 story building in New Jersey instead, it would've been cheaper and safer according to Rick. But they didn't follow his recommendation because they had a lease at the WTC until 2006. Rick's paranoia proved to be correct because at 8:46am on September 11th, 2001 American Airlines Flight 11 slammed into the North Tower of the WTC. The Port Authority came over the loud speaker and told employees in the South Tower to stay at their desks. Rick ignored the order, grabbed his megaphone and emergency equipment, and told his employees to begin following their emergency exit procedures. Rick had about 2700 in the South Tower and another 1000 in WTC 5. While evacuating, Rick called Dan and said "The dumb sons of bitches told me not to evacuate," and, "They said it's just Building One. I told them I'm getting my people the fuck out of here." At 9:03am, while evacuating down the stairs, United Airlines Flight 175 hit the South Tower sending a panic through the evacuating employees. Rick thought back to his time in Vietnam, during his roughest battles, he knew what to do. It was then that Rick Rescorla started to sing "God Bless America" then "Men or Harlech" and continued singing to everyone in the stairwell cutting through the panic and noise and assisting them down to escape the building. While this was all going on Rick found time to call his wife Susan who remembered him saying "Stop crying. I have to get these people out safely. If something should happen to me, I want you to know I've never been happier. You made my life." Rick got 2,687 of his employees out of the building, he even made it to the bottom himself but Rick turned around and went back inside insisting he'd evacuate too "As soon as I make sure everyone else is out." But Rick never made it out. At 9:59am WTC 2 (the South Tower) collapsed, killing nearly everyone still inside. A total of ~700 people perished in that collapse, only 13 were Morgan Stanley employees. Rick and his team prevented the casualty count of 9/11 from doubling that day. Rick's body was never recovered. In 2009, a statue was erected at the National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning, Georgia. On its base it says "In Life and Death, Rescorla Epitomized the Soldier's Code: 'Leave No Man Behind...'".
