"In a fight with the high-octane antisemitism of a Nick Fuentes, Hazony shows up with some biblical exegesis (but 1 Samuel!) and an argument about early modern intellectual history (but Fortescue!). I can practically hear the Groypers responding: Who gives a shit?"
Excellent piece by my friend @MaxFoleyKeene, who went to Yoram Hazony's Erasmus Lecture (an annual First Things confab) and considers the plight of Hazony's project as its twin pillars, MAGA and Likud, both have seen better days commonwealmagazine.org/foley…

The evening before Tuesday's landslide elections, I listened to Yoram Hazony—MAGA intellectual extraordinaire—deliver the prestigious Erasmus Lecture for the conservative religious magazine 'First Things.'

NEW: Commonweal honored Father John Jenkins with its Centennial Award on Monday in New York, 17 years after he defied dozens of American bishops to welcome Barack Obama to Notre Dame despite opposing his abortion policies.
Vanguard’s Jack Brennan, who presented the award, recalled the night Jenkins left the VIPs at Madison Square Garden to sit for hours with the family of a stranger who had suffered a heart attack. “He really is a priest first, isn’t he?” a guest asked him afterward.
In his acceptance speech, Jenkins defended institutions in an age of distrust, calling them “messy, fallible and sinful” while insisting that grace works through them anyway.

How WEIRD was the RI primary? I dug in and found out.
- First time EVER that Baby Boomers were outnumbered by younger gens
- Smiley and McKee did better than when they won ???
- Early voting surpassed mail-in, also first time ever

How David Morales won:
Renters who voted early.
- Just 3 precincts on West Side / Fed Hill delivered a 1,445 vote advantage. Morales won by 1,343 votes.
- Winning a whopping 61% of the vote-share among Early Voters.
- Message discipline on the biggest issue. (ya, rent)

MAP: How David Morales won Providence
He dominated in the West End as expected, but also made inroads on the East Side; only 45 votes separate Smiley and Morales on the East Side (with some mail ballots still to be counted)

My boyfriend makes $30,000 more than I do, but we still split everything. Is it too much to ask to be “treated like a lady” and have him pay for dinners and vacations?

“If had a nickel for every time this year a controversy-stoking Twitter power-user who attended college in Ohio in the late 2000s published a follow-up memoir to their decade-old, bestselling account of early life, I'd have two nickels.”

I truly loved my friend @MaxFoleyKeene's essay on America at 250—superb writing about, among other things, writing—and the hope found in the literary legacy of the founding generation. Plus: pamphlets, slop, MAGA, Dorothy Day, and more. Excerpt below, link in the next post:

The United States, on its 250th birthday, is a country in decline. American Catholics should embrace this sour semiquincentennial as a moment for discernment.

It's been very fun to return to some of the political theory texts I spent most of my 20s studying, and I'm especially grateful to nerd friends like @MaxFoleyKeene for fielding, to take an example, the 5 minute voice message I just sent about studying PT at Berkeley in the 60s
