DJ Shimza fired with immediate effect from Kunye Records but headlines Kunye Fest
DJ Shimza, real name Ashley Kholofelo Raphala, headlined his Kunye Jozi XI event at Huddle Park in Johannesburg on Saturday night, 7 November, despite reports his removal as a director of Kunye Records over allegations of financial misconduct.
Kunye Records and the Kunye music events are closely associated with the internationally acclaimed DJ. Kunye Records is the company at the centre of the corporate dispute, while Kunye Jozi XI is part of the music event series organised under the Kunye Together brand owned by Shimza.
Shimza and his co-director, Jarrad Evan Treger, were removed from Kunye Records following an application by fellow shareholder Hannes Hoffmeister, who according to a report by Africa Daily, accused them of financial misconduct, unauthorised payments and conflicts of interest.
Court papers detail allegations that Shimza failed to disclose his interest in Just Exists (Pty) Ltd, which received R752 000 from Kunye Records between 2022 and 2024. Other transactions involving his company, Shimuzic, were also questioned.
Some of the payments mentioned by Hoffmeister included R300 000 on 31 July 2022 for sponsorship of SOL PTA in July 2022, R120 000 on 1 February 2023 for a Standard Bank sponsorship of a Kunye Johannesburg event, R300 000 on 3 March 2023 for a SOL/Heineken sponsorship of a Kunye Johannesburg event and R32 000 on 1 March 2023 for a KwaZulu-Natal sponsorship in April 2023.
Hoffmeister further alleges on 2 April 2024, Strongbow paid Kunye R540 000 which was transferred to Just Exists the following day under the reference "Just Exist Refund", despite no refund being due and without board approval.
He alleges that a separate payment of R185 000 was made by Kunye Records to DJ Shimza's entity Shimuzic on 1 August 2023, despite the transaction not having board approval and the expense not being related to supporting the company's events.
Hoffmeister also said several payments were made to Shimza's personal tour manager, known as "Lets Push" or "Stuff" without board approval. Further payments were made to "Zito", identified as Shimza's personal photographer.
He accuses Shimza of establishing two brands, U'R and Shimza & Friends, which competed directly with Kunye by targeting the same audience, booking similar artists and hosting events in other South African cities.
The Companies Tribunal ruled on 20 August 2026 that Shimza and Treger be removed as directors of Kunye Records with immediate effect.
However, Shimza and Treger have approached the Western Cape High Court to challenge the decision, arguing that they were not given a proper opportunity to respond to the allegations.
Meanwhile, Saturday's Kunye Jozi XI event went ahead at Huddle Park, with Shimza on the line-up alongside international DJ Francis Mercier and South African house veteran DJ Kent.

There’s a ward 22 in KwaZakhele (historic Congress base including Daku and Njoli) where the people (with nearly 70% of the vote in) have given the two Mayibuyes over a fifth of the vote
Mayibuye (KaFloyd) - 7.98%
Mayibuye Civic Movement - 14.8%
2016 ANC had 77% now 45%
I know it is uncomfortable and too soon to say it, but we need to mention that the decision to fight Andile Lungisa in the middle of a campaign season in a hotly contested Nelson Mandela city has cost the ANC over 10% of the vote
People got turned off and decided to sit home
The ANC must learn to fight its battles better

I see many South Africans asking why smart, articulate, educated and capable young people with private-sector or civil-society experience are not going into politics.
The answer is simpler than you think.
1. The moment you take on a real political role, you are designated domestically as a “politically exposed person” under the Financial Intelligence Centre Act.
Schedule 3A covers party leaders, ministers, premiers, executive mayors and a long list of senior positions.
Banks then have to dig into your source of wealth, get senior approval to keep dealing with you and monitor you more closely.
For someone used to working for your money and living a normal financial life, that extra layer of scrutiny is a real deterrent.
Simply put, the system is unintentionally manufacturing the current list of options for voters.
2. Party funding is extremely concentrated. A handful of big donors and public money tied to existing seats dominate the system.
Michiel le Roux’s Fynbos entities have poured hundreds of millions into the DA over the years, sometimes accounting for nearly half of its declared donations in a quarter.
The Oppenheimers have been major funders of several opposition parties.
For its part, the ruling party has relied heavily on party-linked trusts, individuals and investment vehicles. The problems caused by their running out of funds are well known and long-standing.
My point is this: if you're a new or outsider voice, you'll struggle to compete with those longstanding relationships and established political networks.
3. On top of that, the personal trade-offs are steep. Corporate salaries and career mobility usually beat political pay.
4. Party structures reward loyalty over pure competence.
Never mind the risk of being pulled into scandals, the unending and unforgiving public scrutiny, and the limited room to actually change things; it makes politics a bad deal for anybody with real options.
So, capable people aren’t staying out because they don’t care.
Many are staying out because the incentives, rules and structures make it a low-return, high-risk choice compared with the private sector.

"Some of you are greeting people with 'Viva!' and 'Amandla!' "Are you ward councillors? Do you hand out food parcels?"
"No, General!"
"Good. Because this is SAPS, not a municipality!" KZN Police Commissioner General Mkhwanazi said.
And let me make this even clear: You are not a comrade."
He locked eyes with the squad.
"A criminal doesn't check your political membership before opening fire. If you want to sing struggle songs, join a choir😂. While you wear this uniform, your only political party is the Constitution! Now get in your vans and go to work!"
The courtyard cleared in five seconds flat. 🫡🔥
