A few observations from a week in London:
1/ The startup energy here is completely different than 10y ago. The level of risk taking, ambition, and talent has changed dramatically
2/ There remains a huge fintech opportunity here. Revolut, GoCardless, and many others were built on the incredible finance talent in London
3/ Their vision in building public transit infrastructure is peerless in the west
4/ London in good weather is probably the best city in the world

london is in a unique position to be one of the best incubators for startups. i see so many get funding, open an SF office or set up an american base, then hire american devs because they think they're better. surely for $300-400k a dev they should be absolutely cracked, right? most are average.
they'll admit the very best engineers are in america. but when you're hiring a whole team or department, london is still the better bet. 2:1 on cost, maybe 3:1. and you still get the work ethic and the graft. something the rest of europe lacks.

10 Downing Street is hosting its first ever hackathon.
The two-day hackathon will bring technologists from outside government together with civil servants to work on real problems facing the state.
Anyone is open to apply, although spots will be limited.
They're releasing information on the key tracks later this week, although it's going they are going to be focused on solving real problems that civil servants and the government face today.
The strongest teams will present their work to the Cabinet Secretary (@AntoniaRomeoUK) and other government leaders in No10.
This is a real opportunity for people with a tech background to an impact within government.
WE LOVE TO SEE IT.
Technology presents such a huge opportunity to improve public services, and it's amazing to see the government embrace this opportunity.
Shoutout to @davidgelberg and the team for organising this.
