My roomate was attacked by her boyfriend in a jealous rage. He tried to choke her and instead of screaming or resisting she stayed calm and started to caress his face and then kiss him. This calmed him down and they spent the night together. The next morning she was on the train back to her hometown.

“Self-control” shouldn’t even factor into the equation. If you’re putting yourself in a position where “self-control” is all that’s stopping you from having an affair, you will eventually have an affair, and you’re probably already having one emotionally.
Sensible boundaries in a marriage mean never being in a situation where the occasion or temptation for an affair even occurs. Once “self-control” has to be exercised, you’ve already crossed about ten different lines.
