Following last year’s roundtable discussion with Wirral Chamber of Commerce and Wirral businesses, we met again to discuss what has happened in the last 12 months. It was a valuable opportunity to identify issues for us to work together on. Among other things, we spoke about being ‘Work Ready’ – where I brought forward ideas that were discussed on a panel I sat on for LJMU at Labour Party Conference. I look forward to using these important conversations to shape my work in the constituency as well as in Parliament.

I recently visited Birchwood Rehabilitation Treatment Centre in Heswall. They provide a safe and welcoming space for people seeking help with addiction and trauma recovery, and I enjoyed meeting some of the dedicated team who are empowering individuals with their recovery journeys. Thank you very much to the team at Birchwood for showing me around and discussing the important work you do at the centre.

Last week marked the UK’s first ever Cadet Week, and I want to give a special shoutout to Calday Combined Cadet Force. Calday CCF make amazing contributions to the West Kirby community, offering young people the opportunity to get involved in a range of activities, from STEM and robotics, to visiting local care homes. I’m pleased to say that they will soon be receiving a letter from Calvin Bailey - Minister for Veterans and People - recognising the difference CCF is making for local young people. A huge thank you to all the Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) dedicating their time to units up and down the country! Thank you for giving me such a warm welcome.

On October 7th, choose to remember those whose lives were destroyed by Hamas. Choose to remember those innocent souls dancing at a music festival who were slaughtered. Choose to remember the families and peace activists burnt alive.

Choose not to turn away from these horrors. Choose to honour those who fought with unbelievable dignity and strength to have their loved one freed from captivity.

I will always remember where I was when I heard what was happening on 7 October 2023, travelling to Labour Party Conference in Liverpool. I had been to the peace loving kibbutz of Kfar Aza earlier that year. My mind often goes back to the nursery, with the buggies outside, and

Today marks three years since the deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust. I say since the Holocaust because, throughout history, Jewish people have been subjected to massacres and pogroms. This pernicious and ancient hatred, sometimes described as a light sleeper, feels very much awake and at large today. We know what Hamas did on October 7th, because they filmed it and showed it to the world - proud of their barbarity and depravity. There is no justification - there can be no justification - for such extraordinary acts of evil: setting homes on fire, taking hostages, rape, killing, mutilation of bodies. I am in awe of those survivors who share their testimony with the world to confront those who would look the other way and grieve for those who did not return home. What was so striking here in the UK was that, alongside an outpouring of solidarity for the people of Israel and the Jewish community, there was an immediate and sharp rise in antisemitism. Israel’s war in Gaza does not warrant nor justify hatred towards Jewish people or Israelis, but the fact that this spike in antisemitism took place before the war and in the immediate aftermath of a deadly attack on Jewish people in Israel is chilling. Attacks on the Jewish community - from Golders Green to Heaton Park - have been met with greater investment in security. But our response to antisemitism requires more from each of us. Antisemitism can’t be defeated simply with higher walls and thicker doors. It is a battle of hearts, minds and souls. Consider this: as a Member of Parliament, I go through tougher security to enter one of my local Jewish primary and secondary schools than I do to enter my own constituency office. In Britain, in this decade of the 21st century. This is not the day to debate British foreign policy, or Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank. I know there are people affected by antisemitism - among them longstanding friends - in Britain who are very critical of my position and the position of the Government. While we do not support Israel’s occupation in Palestine, we do stand against those who want to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth and those who do not support the right of the Jewish people to self-determination. Zionism is not racism. The Jewish people have the same right to self-determination as others. We have taken action to defend Israel and defeat those who threaten innocent lives in the past and we will do so again as necessary. Finally, I want to send a message to the Union of Jewish Students. More than 20 years ago you taught me about antisemitism and my generation of student leaders thought that the banning of student Jewish societies was a type of antisemitism confined to history. Today’s generation of Jewish student leaders are confronting a far bigger challenge than we faced. Student marches planned for this anniversary are shameful. It is vital that Jewish students do not stand alone. Today, we all face a choice. We can be bystanders to antisemitism or we can be upstanders for the values that represent the best of this country. But be in no doubt: to remain silent is not a neutral act. It is complicity in racism. On this anniversary those of us who are not Jewish have a responsibility to speak up, to stand against antisemitism, and to stand up for this country’s values.

Three years on from the October 7 attacks on Israel, we remember those who were senselessly killed by Hamas terrorists. The impact of the attacks has been felt not just in Israel, but in Jewish communities across the world who still bear the burden of the tragic events that day. In the years since, we have seen a disturbing rise in antisemitic behaviour in the UK. A year ago we witnessed a horrifying terrorist attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Manchester, with further attacks against Jewish people and institutions since. I want Britain’s Jewish community to hear this from me directly. We stand with you. Abuse and violence against you, in any form, will not be tolerated. Not on our streets, not online, not in our schools or universities. That’s why we are funding protection for synagogues, schools and community buildings, and why we will come down hard on antisemitism wherever it is found - in classrooms, on campuses and in neighbourhoods. At home, we are committed to protecting our citizens from vile hatred. Abroad, we continue to work towards a two-state solution, with Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in peace and security. An attack on Jewish people in Britain is an attack on all of us. Antisemitism has no place in this country, and we will do everything we can to stamp it out.

There will be Green members and leaders who are sickened by today’s motion. They will be appalled at the message their party has just sent to Jewish people. But it’s not enough to frame this motion as unhelpful to party unity. It’s not enough to say this doesn’t help move the argument forward. It’s not even enough to state that you support a two state solution. Even though all of those things are right, there’s something deeper at the heart of this motion (and the amendments that fell) - the party is now explicit: only one people is not entitled to self determination: Jewish people. They should send a different message to the Jewish community. One that recognises the hurt their party will have caused today. And whatever sincerely and deeply held objections they have to the Israeli Government, they should be clear that Zionism is not racism. That would be a start.

One problem my constituents have consistently highlighted this year has been the delays they face when renewing their medically restricted driving licences. Not only is this causing significant inconvenience, but these delays are resulting in additional strain being placed on our vital public services. This is not good enough. I have written to the Chief Executive at the DVLA to make it clear that this needs to improve, and quickly. If you are experiencing any issues related to the DVLA and their services, please get in touch. My team and I will be happy to support you.
