Super grateful for the response to this 🙌
Really nice to see a mix of current and former coaches involved and range of games represented
Still time to add your perspective – every response helps improve the research
Coaches! 👋
I’m trying to build a better picture of well-being and motivation in esports coaches, including why you're involved, what makes the job harder and what helps

Glad more teams are starting to find a place for this intervention.
KC Zeph 🇫🇷: "At MSI we relied too much on each other — so we decided to cut [part of] the communication in scrims"
Back in Berlin after a relentless run, KC's assistant coach sat down with us for a LONG talk:
- What went wrong at MSI
- The radical scrim changes since then
- The draft dynamic with Reapered
- The emotional high of finally beating T1
- Why KC can adapt to any meta by Worlds

A great chance for coaches to get some expert feedback on how they're working in scrims
Also helps to advance the field
Well worth getting involved 👇
Calling League of Legends Coaches 🎮
Are you currently coaching a semi-professional League of Legends team?
I’m conducting a study examining how esports coaches design, deliver and review team practice. This is part of my PhD research at @QUT.
The project aims to better understand coaching in competitive League of Legends and contribute to evidence-informed approaches to coach development and practice design.
Participation involves:
🎤 Two online, audio-recorded interviews (30–60 minutes each): one before the training observation period and one after the recorded sessions have been analysed.
🎥 Recording and securely sharing approximately 3–5 upcoming team training sessions for research analysis.
The study focuses on the coaching environment rather than evaluating individual player performance.
By participating, coaches can contribute their experiences and perspectives to research that may inform future esports coach education and practice design. Participants will also receive a summary of the research findings upon completion.

♥️ and 🔄 greatly appreciated!
The G2 Performance Lab has launched! 🚀
Hugely grateful to be part of such an innovative team led by @IsmaPedraza. This is an exciting opportunity to combine research and practice at the elite level, with benefits for players and coaching staff both within and beyond G2.
.@G2esports has established a new internal research division, the G2 Performance Lab, to study professional player training methodologies and health.
The project is backed by long-term sponsor @redbullgaming.

Over the weekend, I hit 100 citations on my research.
While a modest number, it is exciting to see the work gain traction.
For those who might not be aware, as a researcher and applied practitioner, my work aims to answer a critical question:
How can we (coaches) develop esports athletes?
So far, my published work has explored this question through both theoretical and applied perspectives.
• A theoretical framework introducing skill acquisition and ecological dynamics to esports
• An applied case study demonstrating how practice design can shape team coordination and communication
Together, these studies point to a key insight:
👉 Esports does not have a practice quantity problem; it has a practice design problem
Players & teams already invest a large amount of time playing, watching and talking about the game. However, more can be done.
Coaches should be more intentional in their practice design.
In the applied work with a League of Legends team, we saw how small changes to practice allowed us:
• improve coordination & communication between players
• develop more adaptable decision-making
I continue to find answers to this question through my PhD, and will hopefully be able to share some findings with you guys soon!
In the meantime, if you’re working in esports, coaching, or performance science, I’d love to connect.

To any orgs that hire rookies and expect them to perform only to bench them after 1 split.
Rookies need 4 things (things that G2 provided their league team)
1. Time - they need time to develop. They need opportunities to make mistakes and learn from them.
2. Good coaching staff - G2 league have THE best coaching staff in esports. No question.
3. Teammates that have the mentally to work with rookies and mentor them. It’s even more impressive when you look at how veteran and ready to win those players are.
4. Support and protection from the external negative sentiments online. Create an insulated bubble. More signal, less noise.

I'm helping to organise the @esportshealth conference in Brussels this Thursday. Space is limited but I'd love to get a few more players/coaches involved, potentially even to speak on a panel. Any Belgium-based people (or people willing to travel!) interested?
