Hallucinations leave statistical fingerprints in a generation’s entropy signature. We can leverage these signals to detect hallucinations cheaply and effectively at scale. Great working at JPMorganChase, Global Technology Applied Research. Paper: arxiv.org/pdf/2605.28264

It turns out Kolmogorov Arnold Networks are very closely related to classic feedforward neural networks. In the piecewise linear case, we show how to transform your MLP into a KAN and vice versa 🔁 Come by AISTATS Poster Session 1 tomorrow for more details!

I am obsessed with Sparse Autoencoders! SAEs unpack so much existing value and unlock exciting new capabilities. It's happening in text, images and even proteins. This is a long thread with lots of links and quote tweets of the projects, articles and code that made me 🤯

[LG] The Topos of Transformer Networks M J Villani, P McBurney [King’s College London] (2024) arxiv.org/abs/2403.18415 - The transformer neural network architecture has achieved great success in natural language processing tasks. This paper provides a theoretical analysis of the transformer through the lens of topos theory. - Many common neural network architectures like convolutional and recurrent networks can be embedded in a pretopos of piecewise-linear functions. The transformer lives in the topos completion of this pretopos. - This suggests transformers are higher-order reasoners, while other architectures are first order. The attention mechanism selects parameters for a neural network, then evaluates the network. - The decomposition into 'choose' and 'evaluate' morphisms shows transformers require exponentials and evaluation maps only found in the topos completion. - The internal logic of transformers is richer and more expressive than other architectures. This provides a new perspective on their unprecedented success.

In @ScienceMagazine, we unveil GraphCast: a state-of-the-art AI model generating 10-day weather forecasts faster and more accurately than traditional systems. It can even offer early warnings of extreme weather events such as cyclones. Find out more. ↓
Trained on four decades of historical data, #GraphCast from @GoogleDeepMind is an #AI model that predicts global weather with greater speed and accuracy compared with traditional approaches. Learn more in Science's last issue of 2023: scim.ag/5hf

A neural network with 3 layers (1 hidden layer) is a universal function approximator. A deep rectified linear unit (ReLU) networks can be effectively collapsed into an equivalent wide-shallow explainable network. The proof is evident in the figure:

Nandi and I showed that you can write any deep ReLU neural network as a shallow one. This makes them more interpretable, provides a canonical representation, and may pave the way to understanding their expressive power Looking forward to your thoughts! arxiv.org/abs/2306.11827

👉🏼 So, what makes games and learners so similar and yet so different from each other? A 🧵 on an abstract yet very simple (if you're categorically minded) explanation of what 'backpropagation' actually is. 0/n

Today in topology class: the Hausdoff (T2) property. I mentioned that there are other separation axioms. They address whether you can separate two points, a point and a closed set, or two closed sets using open sets. I found this graphic illustrating some. mathroughguides.wikidot.com/…

New paper with Chris Yu & Henrik Schumacher: cs.cmu.edu/~kmcrane/Projects… We model 2D & 3D curves while avoiding self-intersection—a natural requirement in graphics, simulation & visualization. Our scheme also does an *amazingly* good job of unknotting highly-tangled curves! [1/n]
