It’s the same old story for this team because nothing has changed.
There were market opportunities to sell Tchouameni (United) and Vinicius (Arsenal) to shake up the squad. Instead, both were rewarded new contracts.
This tweet is not mean to scapegoat those two players. It’s meant to call out the club management. After two disaster seasons, you cannot be so stubborn to insist your model is correct. Every fan, media, pundit, analyst has called out the flaws in the squad ad nauseam. Sometimes you have to cut your losses and take what the market gives you in order to send a message to the broader squad and start truly rebuilding.

This team needs the old Mourinho. They need a ruthless leader, someone with a much lower tolerance of mediocrity. None of these problems of the last 2 years are going to get solved anything soon repeating the same things and being so gentle.
Nothing was right the second they came out in the 2nd half. These guys haven’t been up for a Derby at the Metropolitano in years. No urgency, no pride. No life. No leaders. Body language terrible. You’re facing a team that wants to rip your soul out. Show some balls.
Yes, Huijsen brain fart was the nail in the coffin but it wasn’t good 11 v 11 either, and Cucurella was marking 2-3 players by himself with Vinicius walking the entire time he was on the field and the tracking from Tchouameni / Fede being as poor as it was.
Any double pivot that doesn’t include Bernardo is going to be toasted in any big game. It has zero leadership, has no ability to escape pressure, and can't control the ball against a good midfield for more than 10 seconds.
I get that Trent has defensive struggles, but Dumfries has been shocking. Been disappointed with him so far.
You’ve committed to Vini-Mbappe again for the foreseeable future. They’re not compatible even when playing well, let alone Vinicius in this form. There are hungry players on the bench who can produce more at this stage.
My theory was that Mourinho was going to come in for the first couple months without wanting to disrupt things too much — to give some of these stars a chance / benefit of the doubt; and that maybe he’ll need to see it up close in a game of this magnitude. It’s time for those big decisions to come now.
The funny thing about this team, despite all of the talent in the offensive third, has been the inability to convert clear-cut chances. That has been the downfall. Arda and Bellingham put at least four clear opportunities on a platter for Mbappe and Vinicius in the first half. Comes back to bite you. Used to be the way Real Madrid won games, now the opposition is the one punishing mistakes.
Are Roc Nation really the “bad guys”?
What if that’s far from reality?

Good showing vs Fiorentina in that first 45. The group look “plugged in”. The Castilla crop not missing a beat — Ciria in particular looks like he could be impactful at senior level.
Interesting how Mourinho chose to pair up Dumfries and Trent. Dumfries high and wide but often starting in a normal wing back role in possession whereas Trent is central almost like 3rd CB, perfect for him to distribute.
Arda, Fede, Endrick amongst stand outs.
Mourinho and the club have taken the approach of little fanfare and hype. I.E. no big media presentations, just straight to work. Maybe a little unfair to the new players not to get their day in the sun but sending a direct message that this year is about work. I like it.
On an accounting basis, Madrid’s academy sales are immensely valuable because the players carry little remaining book value. If given the choice of selling an academy prospect for €30M or a first team player still carrying book value for the same offer, the financial metrics will lean towards selling the academy player. The two €30 million fees are not recorded equally, the first-team player’s remaining book value must be deducted from the sale price. So selling players with no book value brings in €125M on the year, meanwhile Rodri and Diomande, would add only approximately €38 million of annual amortization.

Twelve months ago, wrote a piece and pushed back on the negativity surrounding Real Madrid’s finances. This is Part II: Madrid are about to spend heavily again. Does this mean a big sale is coming? Is the Vini renewal off the table? What's the new normal?

Securing ~€80MM for two players (Nico Paz, Victor Muñoz) who played less than 12 official matches for Real Madrid is good business.
As talented as they are, they are not in positions of need for RM. Taking that cash and reinvesting in the right profiles is what this club needs to do.
