In November 1971, Philip K. Dick came home to find his fireproof filing cabinet blown open and all his papers gone. Whoever searched his house was looking for something. But his first feeling wasn't fear. It was relief. "Thank God I'm not crazy," he said. "I got real enemies." Normies know his work even if they've never read him. Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report. Hollywood made a fortune off one question he asked till the very end. What if this world isn't the real one? In 1974 something answered. He called it a pink beam of light. It told him his baby son had a hidden hernia, and the doctor found it right where the light said. He spent the rest of his life trying to name what spoke to him. He filled 8,000+ pages of notes and never finished. In 1977 he stood in front of a crowd at a science fiction festival in Metz, France, and stopped calling it fiction. He told them reality gets edited. Something he called the Programmer reaches back, changes a variable, and the timeline rewrites itself around us. Déjà vu, he said, is just a scrap of memory from the version that got overwritten. Then he gave them the line the speech is remembered for. "If you find this world bad, you should see some of the others." Things got awkward as the room fell silent. But he meant it. Last night @elonmusk said anomalies in the matrix are inevitable. PKD said it first, 50 years ago, to a room of fans and reporters who thought he'd lost his mind. A year before Metz, he'd already written the raw version. The book I mentioned yesterday, Radio Free Albemuth. He inserted himself into it as a character named Phil. And it sat unpublished until after he died, like a seed in the ground. Compared to his other works, very few people have actually read it (until recently). In the book, America is run by a POTUS who rules through informers. Neighbors rat out neighbors. A record exec named Nicholas starts hearing a voice in the middle of the night, and everything it tells him comes true. It saves his son. It warns him about a trap before the trap is set. It tells him the lights went out on this world a long time ago, and it has been calling ever since, one person at a time. On an operating table, he finally asks who it is. "I am your father." Where are you? "Above the stars." The government kills Nicholas. And it kills the young girl who helped him hide the message inside pop music. It sends his buddy Phil to a prison labor camp for life. But in the very last chapter Phil's sitting in a work yard in east LA, breaking concrete in the sun for three cents a day. A plumber named Leon sits down beside him against a razor wire fence and splits a baloney sandwich with him. Turns out Leon used to be a preacher. And Leon tells him that all of Jesus's parables were actually code. The pearl of great price. The treasure buried in a field. The mustard seed. The grain of wheat that falls into the ground and dies. Something small gets planted in a person and grows there in secret. Jesus talked that way, Leon says, because Rome (and something else) was listening. When some believers hear “my kingdom is not of this world” they figure they can just sit comfy and wait for heaven. But Leon rejects that. Believing in the next world isn’t enough, he says. It has to happen HERE, where the suffering is. Then he asks Phil where the Master did his work. "Here in this world." Exactly. And just beyond the fence, a group of schoolkids stares at these two old prisoners of the state. One of them is holding a radio. A song comes on, the #1 song in the country, by a different band on a different label, carrying the exact same message the government spent the whole book trying to kill. They shut down one label, but the message still found a way. Phil listens, and on the wind he hears more radios switching on all over the city. The kids. People in the middle of a war often don't know it's a war. They think it's just life. PKD spent his years in this realm certain that something was editing our world, and the voice he heard kept saying the same thing. You have a Father. And he hasn't stopped calling. The message spreads. One person at a time.
