Our Senior Archaeologist Ben Mortimer recently journeyed to Belgium to assist Matrix team member Duncan Williams with his PhD fieldwork at the Battle of Waterloo site. Ben says the experience of working on such a significant site has been unforgettable!
#archaeology #fieldwork
In 2022, Duncan spent hours on a quad bike conducting geophysical surveys of portions of the battlefield revealing many anomalies. This season will be spent ground-truthing.
Follow along with @DigWaterloo to see what the 2023 field season reveals!

We recently heard @AwesomeOttawa is rewarding the "Digging Dudes" who metal detect and dig up artifacts in Ontario. This is prohibited under the Ontario Heritage Act. @OntArchSoc @APA_Ontario @ExploreON
November's award will support The Digging Dudes and their hunt for Ottawa Valley treasures! awesomefoundation.org/en/pro… #ottawa #ottcity #myottawa #treasurehunting #metaldetectorist #metaldetecting #detectorist #detectorists
Section 48 of the OHA forbids conducting archeological field work without a permit or the removal of any artifact or physical evidence of past human activity.
MEdia outlets like @CBCOttawa @OttawaMorning also recently shared the story (screenshot from their newscast - is that a copper point?!?!). Activities such as this should not be encouraged, made public, nor awarded. The proper term for this is looting, and they are looters.
[David Attenborough voice] "Here we've found the elusive Senior Archaeologist. Well adapted to the stresses of the office environment, habituated to emails and phone calls, it misses regular digging experience and is maladapted for life in the wild."

A burial site investigation we did as Paterson Group, pre-Matrix Heritage.
By looking at it today, you would never know that part of downtown Ottawa was built on the first settlers’ cemetery of Bytown.
Read the new blog from Dr. Janet Young, to learn more about what DNA analysis can tell us about early Bytown settlers. historymuseum.ca/blog/dna-an…

This artifact is a projectile point type known as Otter Creek and is between 5,500 and 6,000 years old!
More frequent flooding is washing away archaeological resources like this – thanks for your interest in archaeology and learning about the pre-contact history of the region.
