Lastly, we argue that how important play is for innovation, pointing out how the initial emergence of play objects correlates with periods of innovation.

We have identified different learning processes and aims as well as changing roles within a community of practice of Wodaabe bowyers.

Furthermore, there seems to be an increase in absolute numbers of play objects for the Inuit during the Little Ice Age, i.e. coinciding with changing climatic conditions.

This notion correlates very well with the huge different in absolute numbers of play objects from the two cultures, with only 72 objects from the Norse and almost 2400 objects from the Inuit.

We propose their different responses is partly to be found by looking at the play objects of the two cultures, with an elaborate miniature toolkit presented to the Inuit children and a more stringent one presented to the Norse children.

We then introduce the two cultures in study, the Norse and the Inuit, who both inhabited Greenland during the 2nd millennium CE. Despite facing the same climatic changes, they responded very differently.

Our study starts by highlighting the overlooked role children have played in climatic change responses, despite their importance to innovation and adaptation.
