This is vile. The Heritage Foundation used to be the intellectual bulwark of American conservatism, and by extension had major influence throughout the broader Anglosphere. Kevin Roberts has turned Heritage into an echo chamber for the worst aspects of MAGA, and with the statement below, is now swimming in the same waters as alt-right hate mongers. Tucker Carlson, who Roberts defends below as a friend and ally of Heritage, has in recent months given a platform to kooks who admire Adolf Hitler; minimize the Holocaust as the result of poor logistical planning; and blame Winston Churchill for the Second World War. Carlson himself repeated the antisemitic trope of Jews as Christ-killers at Charlie Kirk's funeral; has demonstrated an obsessive hostility to Israel and American Jews; and has acted as a propagandist for Vladimir Putin, plus the Qatari theocracy. Surely the last straw for his credibility was his friendly chat with lunatic hate monger Nick Fuentes last week, who has repeatedly denied the Holocaust; called for the execution of "the perfidious Jews;" called Adolf Hitler "really f*ing cool," amongst countless other expressions of rank hatred for minorities. Compare Roberts' indifferent response to all of this with the critical role played by William F. Buckley Jr. over decades to identify and condemn antisemitism on the right. In 1991 he famously wrote a 40,000 word essay assessing whether columnist and Presidential candidate Pat Buchanan was antisemitic, concluding that "I find it impossible to defend Pat Buchanan against the charge that what he did and said during the period under examination amounted to anti-Semitism." With those words, Buckley effectively excommunicated Buchanan from the mainstream conservative movement, and the Republican Party. (Here in Canada, Premier Ernest Manning played a similar role by driving antisemites out of the Alberta Social Credit Party.) Liberal elites across western democracies failed seriously to police the emergence of the new antisemitism in their ranks, allowing it to metastasize as a potent political force in parties and institutions of the left. Roberts' statement means that one of the most important institutions on the right is making the same tragic error.
