some news: I resigned from teaching and am a week into my career at Fidelity Investments. as much as I loved my students, the last 2 years + the rhetoric around teaching has been painful enough to cause me to need to step back. here’s to the future! (+ wfh days with the best)

After three days of community building and norm setting, it’s so nice to get back to physically doing math! Math 1 students are already taking advantage of all the whiteboards in my room while Math 3 Honors students started today with some Quizlet Live.

I also had a student tell me yesterday that they really liked my taste in music (I play music softly in the background almost every time group work happens) so clearly I’m also educating them on what’s TRULY important here 😉💁🏼‍♂️

You CAN be the fun teacher, or the nice teacher, or the teacher that all the kids like, and still have high expectations of them to follow the rules. It IS possible.

had a teacher first this week: a student who I’ve only taught virtually this year emailed me thanking me for everything I’ve done this year and if I would be willing to write her a letter of recommendation for college. I’ve never replied “Yes!” to an email so fast.

I was having a wonderful Sunday afternoon, EVAAS. Why’d you have to go trigger my fight or flight response like that 😭

Dose #2: complete. Feeling so grateful and so, so hopeful.

I get to start teaching from the building next week (I’ve been home since august and students come back after spring break!!) and I kinda want to have my students say goodbye to my cat since it’s the last time they’ll get to see her w/ me. Is that too extra or nah?

Full disclosure: she usually is asleep during 1st period but she has interrupted (or caused me to stop mid sentence) my 3rd-6th period multiple times this year. And I, being who I am as a person, fully allow this to happen and talk to her while live on Zoom.

NC has 185,708 public school (incl. public charter) workers. This includes teachers, admin, & all support staff. NC gets roughly 145K vaccine doses a week. Allowing for teachers that have already been vaccinated, NC could vaccinate ALL staff in one week if they chose to. If.

My 8/3 kids knew the way to my heart and that was to bring me an iced coffee in the morning. I mean, they were already at Starbucks anyway... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Replying to @MathWithMrCole
my starbucks runs for you in the morning to supply your caffeine addiction...

My biggest worry with teaching virtually was that my students wouldn’t get to know the real me... the coffee addicted, sarcastic me who loves Disney, music, and my cat way too much. This gift from a student shows that they know everything they need to know about me 😍

Update: I did the first oral exam with a student today who’s having surgery tomorrow and it went SO WELL! I loved getting to hear the student talk through the problem, hear her catch her (minor) mistakes, and engage in deeper conversation about the math. Can’t wait for this week!

My biggest self-challenge this year has been rethinking how I assess students. I’ve tried a lot of different ideas - Google Forms, projects, student choice, etc. This unit, thanks to MA509 @ NCSU, I’m ending the semester with an oral exam (my school nixed midterms this year).

It’s a two part test. Part 1, students pick one of four questions and record a Flipgrid explaining the math. Moderated so only I see responses. Part 2, they schedule a short Zoom w/ me and I pick one from a different set of 4. They get one page of notes and can pass one time.

How will it go? I’ll let you know in two weeks. But I get so much less anxiety preparing for midterms and finals at State this semester with this model and I’m hoping my students will feel the same way. Thoughts? Ways to make it better?

The discomfort (or blatant hate/bias) this will bring up for some is even more reason to share. The lives of Transgender people are inherently worthy of love, protection & support. I acknowledge & affirm our Transgender students, family members & community today & every day. 🏳️‍⚧️❤️
Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. @RethinkSchools asks, what is required by each of us to protect the lives of transgender people? Check out @BLMAtSchool "The Year of Purpose" resources to learn more. blacklivesmatteratschool.com…

Yes it’s late. I have an asynchronous day tomorrow. Don’t judge. I want to hold space for my students should they need it. I’m giving them space to journal. But what else? Do I post a zoom link and let students use it if they need? Offer calendar appointments?
We did it. We won the general election. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
