New paper from Nicky Morton and our @MathSpatCog group in Cognition @mathcogsociety @UCNZ @MarsdenFund
New research shows that adults can learn to add continuous magnitudes by feedback in an analogue non-symbolic task. This ‘implicit computation’ suggests that our perceptual system may represent magnitudes with elements of algebraic structure.

I'm stoked to be on a research team led by Dr Nicky Morton who's just received a @MarsdenFund grant for an interdisciplinary project on the perceptual origins of core knowledge and mathematical cognition. Well done, Nicky! @RSNZ @UCNZ @MCLS

We've just published a paper in Psychological Review on the origins of arithmetic. Why are addition and multiplication its fundamental operations? The answer may surprise you!
