Ukraine is asking the EU for 70 billion euros to continue fighting in 2027. That is 0.4% of the EU GDP or 155 euros per European. Not having a battle-hardened victorious Russian army on Europe's border is worth roughly 2000% of the EU GDP. Our leaders must find the money.

For everyone chiming in with "RNA and protein don't correlate"… here's some thoughts I wrote up on this point a while back:
One massive, systemic issue in genomics is that we have collectively decided to pretend that all these assays are far more accurate and precise than they actually are. Until we reckon with that, progress will be limited, AI or no.

Meloni: I do not miss the Russian tanks in Prague and Budapest. I do not miss the Berlin Wall. If Ukraine stopped defending itself tomorrow, Russia would occupy a European nation and Soviet-style imperialism would return. Surrender is not peace. It is conquest. 1/

ALL MODELS ARE USEFUL IF YOU KNOW WHERE THEY WORK AND WHERE THEY FAIL. If your hype laden papers & marketing don't have a massive caveats and limitations section listing all the effort u put into finding failure modes, u have not done the requisite work. 16/

Nobody in real life cares about ur cherry picked examples of generalization. Show us contexts where it fails. This not only enables users to use ur models effectively but it also helps build credibility in what u are doing & helps u & others push the horizons further faster. 15/

1. COMBINATORIAL STOICHIOMETRY: Regulators do not act alone, there is redundancy, competition, synergy & feedback. Knocking them down one by one is insufficient to learn the spectrum of regulatory effects (which is essential to generalize). 2/

When we started responding to Russia’s operation against our data centers, and when our strikes reached Yandex’s data centers, it suddenly became a little easier to breathe on many social media platforms. A lot of people noticed it. There was less hate, less division, and fewer provocations. Because there were fewer bots. And it’s pretty clear where those bots were coming from – if they disappeared when Yandex went offline. This proves, again and again, that Europe is not the source of the problems. Europe is not the one making everything more difficult. Most importantly, we need people in America, every morning, when the day in Europe is already moving toward evening, to really see what is happening. To see the truth. From a speech at the Warsaw Security Forum. (3/3)

The idea of kicking humans out of scientific research because machines may eventually move faster than humans, and should not be slowed down while human understanding catches up with their progress, is one of the most barbaric, ignorant, dull, and sick ideas I have ever encountered. It assumes that scientific ideas advance along a linear path toward some absolute, final truth. A conception of science worthy of a bad science-fiction novel. Science is part of human culture. Kicking humans out of it would not simply be a matter of accelerating scientific progress. It would be a massive transfer of power. Because if humans cease to participate in and understand the production of scientific knowledge, then whoever controls the machines controls scientific and technological progress, and, ultimately, society. It is, essentially, an idea subversive of the democratic order.

I am beyond irate by the scientists whose main reaction to the slopdrop is excitement about the results. The immediate priority has to be securing the pipeline for junior researchers. Otherwise, we will be the last generation of humans to understand, let alone do, mathematics.

One thing that seems lost in this chaos is that mathematicians’ use of LLMs has been consistently productive over the past year or so, leading to carefully written papers that (1) contain results of a comparable level to those produced in the OAI drop; (2) properly acknowledge both AI use and other people’s work; and (3) are ready for peer review and dissemination at workshops and seminars. And all this was done using models that, apparently, are less capable than the ones used by OAI (there is no way to verify this independently, hence the “apparently”). So, what is getting lost in the chaos is that there was already a way to go about this intelligently, without damaging the human infrastructure that produces mathematicians, and with mathematical progress picking up speed. A clean way forward would be something like giving mathematical researchers access to frontier models. This would give OAI independent, external validation of the quality of their models, while allowing mathematicians to produce papers that are readable, credible, correct, and fair to both the literature and the developers.

Deepmind provided Alphafold as a brilliant free-to-use, open-source tool that greatly helps biologists being more productive and successful. This is a great example of an AI application beneficial to humanity. Conversely, OpenAI went for a vicious, cynical blitz on low-hanging fruit proofs, leaving mathematicians to sort out the resulting mess over coming months, without any hope to get any credit for it, and they didn't even release the model they used. This is a great example of an AI application detrimental to humanity.
I don’t get it! Did you see structural biologists, myself included, throw an absolutely tantrum when DeepMind released AlphaFold and the AlphaFold DB?? They trained on the PDB , the collective effort of the entire structural biology community. No, they were given a Nobel Prize and everyone was thrilled to have this incredible tool. We didn’t lose our jobs, it empowered us to go further

major vibe shift: Europe now has the best open AI model in the West 🇪🇺 "It is the best open weights model from US or Europe on aggregated benchmarks." i'm especially bullish on Mistral because they've essentially been anointed as Europe's AI champion: > €3 billion raised. the biggest tech equity round in European history > it's the last European-owned company still building top AI models (Germany's Aleph Alpha got bought by Canada's Cohere) > Jensen Huang told Macron that Mistral needed France's biggest companies rallying behind it. Macron's reply: "who are they? let me call them." and he personally called them > Macron went on national TV and told the French to download Mistral's chatbot instead of ChatGPT > the EU's own scaleup fund co-led their round, with Dutch chip giant ASML and the government of Luxembourg also writing checks > France + Germany have committed to bringing Mistral + SAP into their governments > the European Space Agency just signed on to build with Mistral > and on top of all this, the EU has mobilized €200B for European AI, including €20B for AI gigafactories Europe knows what's at stake: building and controlling our own powerful AI is an existential geopolitical priority and Mistral is our only real shot at competing with the Americans and the Chinese. so you have the most powerful people in Europe in their corner, with a *very* concrete reason to help them win. that backing is massively beneficial as it gets them priority access to money, compute and government customers. any startup would kill for this competitive advantage, and it's why i think Mistral will keep delivering. i'm very happy to see Europe shipping like this and i also love the commitment to the Le Chonk bit lol eu/acc 🇪🇺
Meet Mistral Large 4, aka Le Chonk. • 1T parameters, natively multimodal. 49B active. It is the best open weights model from US or Europe on aggregated benchmarks. • State-of-the-art on critical workloads, including cyber defense, manufacturing and finance and it surpasses closed frontier models on visual grounding. • Forged in Europe end-to-end and is deployable from Europe via our own Mistral Cloud infrastructure. • Available to all via API today. Working with cybersecurity partners privately. Open weights release end of October.
