I was thinking up conjectures for my Adv. Calc class' exam and stumbled upon one that stumped me. Any ideas? If \sum x_n converges, then there exists some integer m>1 such that \sum (x_n)^m converges.

When \sum x_n converges absolutely, m=2 works. And we can assume that |x_n|<1 for all n so that 0 \le |(x_n)^m| \le x_n. But when there are negative terms, the comparison test is not applicable. Needless to say, I won't be assigning this conjecture on the exam.

What can you make with a CD case, black paper, cardboard and tape? A teleprompter! Using it for prerecorded lecture videos. (Using PromptSmart app on Android)

I created videos showing how to set up a pivot table gradebook with progress reports. Here's the current playlist: youtube.com/playlist?list=PL… More videos to come!

To use l'Hospital's Rule, you need an indeterminate form. Using l'H without this sometimes yields a false answer: lim x->1 2x/(3x+1). While 0/∞ is *not* an indeterminate form (the limit is 0), is there an example where attempting to use l'H on 0/∞ results in a wrong answer?

Thought on the way in to work today: The Catholic practice of regular self-examination and Confession makes me a better prof. Higher ed as a whole IMO has a real problem with owning mistakes and seeking forgiveness; for me that's everyday life.

As one of said students, not even I can fully follow West's grammar, but most of it is very much ingrained in my writing style.

3/4. I've been influenced by Doug West's style of writing, although I likely don't adhere to all of it. Maybe no one does fully except West and his students! Nevertheless, "The Grammar According to West" should be essential reading for all mathematicians: faculty.math.illinois.edu/~w…

I'm torn between wanting to share this with Calc II students and knowing that if I do, I will be subjecting myself to similar (except nonsensical) manipulations.
Writing e^π in two different ways yields a statement I would never believe, were it just handed to me.

I've been using Perusall in my graduate advanced calculus course this semester to address this issue and the results so far are promising.
This article about student reading completion (class prep) looks at the problem from many angles. My jaw dropped on the floor a few times. At the end it offers practical (obvious, but rarely used) suggestions. chronicle.com/interactives/2… via @chronicle

Teaching a Python-based course this fall. I used repl.it last year. It worked ok, but I'm curious how "real" CS profs run their courses (creating/submitting assignments)?

Free and/or open source would be ideal. As would not having students have to install anything. Setting up my own server is an option. And integrating with Canvas would be a plug. Am I searching for a unicorn?

Playing an RPG with @DrChadWiley and managing my character's inventory. Seriously asking whether not each item "sparks joy". What's happening to me?!
