Unfortunately, this cult of ignorance and anti-intellectualism has been intensified and weaponized for political and financial purposes, with anti-evolutionists, antivaxxers, climate deniers, et al., polluting the dialogue/information space.

"We recognize the power of new technologies for mathematical reasoning and appreciate what they can contribute to the subject we know and love. We are generally optimistic about the role AI can play, but we are deeply concerned by some recent calls to formalize everything as quickly as possible. If done well, a large-scale, coordinated formalization effort could enormously expand mathematical exploration and discovery. Done poorly, it will be, at best, a waste of resources; more likely, it will do lasting damage." Yes to Life, in Spite of Everything – 11 months after his release from the concentration camps, Viktor Frankl gave a set of lectures on moving beyond optimism and pessimism to find life's deepest source of meaning. They were lost for decades, never before published in English: themarginalian.org/2020/05/1…

Chill, it’s only been 3 hours. He’s 5 years old so it takes time. Anyways, we started with bijections and cardinality, moved on to countable versus uncountable infinities, Cantor’s diagonal argument, Hilbert’s Hotel, ordinal arithmetic and transfinite induction. I’m trying to get to the aleph hierarchy before bedtime, but he’s really struggling with the axiom of choice and Zorn’s lemma. I think I’ll wait until the morning to cover the continuum hypothesis—don’t want to give him bad dreams, ya know.

Many people just starting out on Lean formalization have enjoyed playing the Natural Numbers Game. Now Autumn Mapes has produced Visual Lean, isomorphic to the original but playable in a lovely intuitive way with clicking and dragging rather than typing. leangame.autumnofautumn.com/

A book is made from a tree. It is an assemblage of flat, flexible parts (still called "leaves") imprinted with dark pigmented squiggles. One glance at it and you hear the voice of another person, perhaps someone dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, the author is speaking, clearly and silently, inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people, citizens of distant epochs, who never knew one another. Books break the shackles of time ― proof that humans can work magic. - Carl Sagan

I love math, and I thought this was a beautiful interview. My mom is allergic to math, and she thought this was a beautiful interview. So I think many people will find value in this conversation. I listened to it yesterday, but I suspect the video version will be more poignant

Mathematical proof dates back at least to Euclid in 300 BCE, and yet little is known about what happens in the mind when humans solve proofs.  This week, an SFI working group co-organized by SFI External Professor Simon DeDeo (Carnegie Mellon University) brought together mathematicians, cognitive scientists, computer scientists, and philosophers to ask what it means to understand a proof.  As DeDeo says, that question matters more now that machines are proving theorems “we used to consider to be at the absolute outer edge of human possibility.” santafe.edu/news-center/news…

"Words are events, they do things, change things. They transform both speaker and hearer; they feed energy back and forth and amplify it. They feed understanding or emotion back and forth and amplify it." From Ursula K. Le Guin, the best thing I have ever read on the power – and magic – of conversation: themarginalian.org/2015/10/2…

“It takes a fearless, unflinching love and deep humility to accept the universe as it is. The most effective way Carl knew to accomplish that, the most powerful tool at his disposal, was the scientific method, which over time winnows out deception. It can't give you absolute truth because science is a permanent revolution, always subject to revision, but it can give you successive approximations of reality.” ― Ann Druyan

I think people who are knocking on Terence Tao's take are missing what I believe is a bigger point he is making. While it's true that drugs can be approved without understanding their MOA, do we want to live in a world where humans have completely ceded their understanding to machines and are at their whims? If neither I nor anyone else understood how my dishwasher worked, a. Nobody would be able to fix it if it broke down. b. We would be in a lot of trouble if in addition it became intelligent and exhibited RSI.
This is a slide from Terence Tao's 'Math 2.0' public lecture yesterday evening at Caltech. I am highly confident that, if the cure actually worked, almost any Stage 4 cancer patient would tell you that human comprehension of its mechanism is completely irrelevant to them.
