He shot his own German Shepherd in the face with a rifle. Now it's a misdemeanor.
Sky is about 7. A neighbor who cared for him called him one of the sweetest dogs she'd ever met.
June 28, Hamburg, New York. Police find Sky hurt in the backyard. A single gunshot wound to the face.
The day before, police say, his owner Dennis Rutkowski, 62, called them twice asking them to destroy the dog. Police say he claimed Sky was possessed.
Picture your dog. Trusting you. Then the rifle.
He was charged with a felony. On Friday he pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated cruelty. A misdemeanor.
He faces up to 364 days. That's the ceiling. Until sentencing, he's free on probation supervision.
Sky lived. He's been adopted.
Sky got a new home. The man who shot him got a misdemeanor.
Sentencing is Dec 8 before Justice Debra Givens. Call the Erie County DA's office at 716-858-2400 and tell them Sky deserves the maximum.
