During the 2022 lockdown in Shanghai, police came to a young man's apartment to take his family away for quarantine. He refused, and one of the officers told him that if he didn't comply, then not only would he be punished but also his family for the next three generations.
"Sorry, this is our last generation. Thank you," he said, speaking from off camera.
In China, that threat is real. If you want to join the army, the police, or the Communist Party, you have to pass a political background check. It can look at your parents' records. So if you get in trouble, it can come back on your kids years later. The officer was betting he'd back down to protect the children he'd have one day.
But that only works on someone who's planning to have children. He wasn't, so there'd be no next generation for them to punish.
The video went viral, and Weibo, China's version of Twitter, blocked "last generation" as a hashtag. People online took it as a statement about their whole generation. "Your rule ends with me," one user wrote in the comments.
This idea built on a trend that had emerged among young people in China about a year before, known as "lying flat": opting out of the race to afford an expensive apartment, work long hours, and get promoted, because it doesn't pay off. His line took it a step further: Don't just stop working so hard. Stop having kids.
The numbers point the same way. In 2016, China had 17.86 million births. Last year, it had 7.92 million, less than half. Births were already falling before 2022, mostly because apartments and school cost so much and people are marrying later. One man's answer to the police didn't do that.
Now the government wants people to have kids again. It offers families 3,600 yuan a year for each child, or about $500, and its new five-year plan only aims to stop births from falling further. For generation after generation, the government could count on people to behave because they feared what might happen to their kids. Now, it's paying people to have children at all.

Have been witnessing a lot of negative narrative and hostility towards shastra puja all over internet since last 24 hours .
As a nation we have history of celebrating valour , combat , culture and sacrifices since ancient times and under no circumstances an altered narrative is acceptable to me as an Indian 🇮🇳 of the current generation .
Those who are either unaware or ignorant need to know #India has a long, complex history of warfare, a rich tradition of weaponry, the ritual of Shastra/Ayudha Puja (worship of weapons and tools), and a modern gun culture that is part of our culture and is accountable highly regulated mechanism rather than carelessly permissive.
From Civilians with valid license to even the bravest of India like Indian defence forces historically emphasized war elephants, cavalry, archers, and later gunpowder weapons.
Pre-colonial states often featured flexible, multi-polar warfare rather than highly centralized standing armies of the European model.
What is a Shastra Puja / Ayudha Puja ?
Shastra Puja (or Ayudha Puja) is the ritual of worshipping weapons, tools, and instruments. It is observed mainly during Navratri, typically on Mahanavami (ninth day) in South India or on Vijayadashami (Dussehra) in parts of India .
Significance and origins:
• It honors the instruments of livelihood and protection as embodiments of divine power (linked to Goddess Durga’s victory over Mahishasura, or Rama’s victory over Ravana).
• Mythological roots include the Pandavas retrieving and worshipping their weapons (hidden in a Shami tree during exile) on Vijayadashami before the Kurukshetra War, and traditions of warriors/kings performing the rite before battle.
• Goddesses Saraswati (learning), Lakshmi (prosperity), and Parvati/Durga (power) are invoked.
• In modern practice, it extends beyond weapons to vehicles, machines, books, computers, farm tools, and workplace instruments—cleaned, decorated with flowers, turmeric, and kumkum, and offered prayers. It expresses gratitude for tools that sustain life and work.
As Indians we pray in gratitude to our machines , vehicles , nature and even arms .
Everyone from civilians to Indian armed forces continue the tradition; defence ministers and military leaders perform Shastra Puja on Dussehra too so whether anyone likes the puja or not it was , is and will be part of culture and core of the Republic 🇮🇳🫡.
Hope it clears the air for some intellectuals both in and out of India .

The privilege of being Hindu in India!
Hundreds of weapons on display in the name of Shastra Puja, followed by the grand claim of Dharma Raksha.
Imagine the outrage if a Muslim did the same thing while claiming to protect his religion. #IndianMuslims
