Nirvana's landmark album Nevermind, released in 1991, has achieved a monumental milestone by surpassing AC/DC's Back in Black on the list of the best-selling albums of all time. According to updated figures from Chartmasters, the album that immortalized Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl climbed to sixth place on the chart with 66.832 million equivalent sales. This narrow margin (just 1,000 units ahead of AC/DC’s 66.831 million) rewrites the record books. While the Australian band’s classic still holds the lead in physical vinyl sales, the overwhelming strength of the digital catalog and streaming of grunge’s seminal work ultimately tipped the scales in favor of the Seattle trio. The achievement carries even more weight when viewed alongside the giants that surround it, as it has also surpassed Pink Floyd’s iconic album The Dark Side of the Moon.

Pearl Jam released Vs. in America 33 years ago today, on October 19, 1993. It was their first album with producer Brendan O'Brien and drummer Dave Abbruzzese, and right up to the last minute it was going to be called Five Against One, after a line in "Animal." Some early cassettes still have that title printed on them. Jeff Ament took the cover photo, an angora goat behind a fence on a farm in Victor, Montana. The band refused to make a single music video, and it still sold 950,378 copies in its first five days, the biggest first week since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991. It spent five weeks at No. 1. 🎸 Favorite track on Vs.: Go, Animal, Daughter, Rearviewmirror or Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town? 🎸 👇️

On this date in 1993, this fantastic album came out. Vs. is arguably one of the most underrated sophomore records - it had to follow up Ten, which was already considered by many a rock classic and was STILL charting when Vs. itself debuted. Tracks like Rearviewmirror, Daughter, Elderly Woman…, and Animal proved their debut was no fluke. They were indeed a GREAT band. What is your favorite set of lyrics from this record? I’ll post mine below.
