Despite living for over a century, very few people have ever gotten to see this side of Ven, and most of the ones who did are long gone. Nowadays, Sophie might be the only one left. Someone else might be despondent with grief at the thought, but Ven internalized that long... +
The worst part of losing so many people was that it was hard to think of things that *didn't* remind you of someone you lost. Sometimes, it was as simple as a word, or a feeling in the air, and then you'd be taken by that grief all over again. No matter how hard you steeled... +
... yourself, it would reach you eventually.
Ven raises an eyebrow. "You gotta aim higher than that. I, for one, won't be letting the worms take me. The vultures, sure, that's tolerable, but the worms'll have to find another meal." As far as Ven goes, that's basically as... +
No doubt they were telling everyone who would listen; those softies were probably still singing the praises of the Iron Lords just as much as the old bards did in the Dark Ages. Not that there weren't *any* praises to sing, of course; it's just that, when you're in a... +
... world, Sophie deserves to see that the least.
At least, it's clear their thoughts have drifted down a similar path. Ven regards the stones all around them, laid out in neat but imperfect rows. "Someday, whoever's left will probably put us in here too. +
“Yeah.” Ven could understand the sentiment, because after everything that had happened, she tried her best not to think about the Iron Lords. Besides Sophie, she’d avoided the others all these years; she wasn’t interested in any apologies, giving *or* receiving, so it was… +

"Maybe," Sophie says, suddenly more interested in the bits of burning wood than making eye contact. "I haven't really... I know a lot of people come by during Iron Banner. I just don't make a habit of being here when they are."
There's a narrowing of her eyes at Alax's chipper demeanor, even in the face of Ven's usual vitriol. In Ven's experience, Alax rarely ever let her facade crack, but there was something different about these smiles, something that she couldn't quite place. It bothers her.
+
Still, nothing makes Ven frown quite like that. She scoffs and steps to the side. "Don't say it like that. *I'm* doing *you* a favor." Even despite Ven's usual protestations, it's hardly a negotiation: she's already decided that she's going to tag along. All else is merely... +
Ven raises an eyebrow at her. "I'm surprised you can't just send *Ryale* to deal with it." There's an unfocused jab in there, struggling to find out whether it's aimed at Alax or Ryale, but Ven lets it wither without further clarification. Instead, she moves along, taking a... +
Running into Alax Sang isn't that unusual for Venlana. What *is* unusual is for it to happen at an hour like this. Normally by now, most people aboard the Ch'at Cssun'i have made their way to private quarters or personal ships or a barracks, and very few still roam the halls... +

The fact that Alax wakes up when her comm pings is a miracle—once she's put Avabush in her system, it's at least three hours of deadened sleep. Waking up *is* a good sign. If anyone ever tries to kill her, she'll open her eyes in time to feel it.
... simply, without her usual sword at her side.
For a moment, she stands in slight surprise after they come face to face, but eventually she respond, simply stating "Fresh air." For inexplicable reasons, she's lying about this: she was actually on her way back from a smoke... +
