What is a Commodity? A commodity is a useful thing produced for exchange. People produced useful things long before commodity production became dominant. Grain grown and consumed within a household has use-value, but it is not a commodity.

Labour that was carried out privately is continually reduced to the proportions in which society can recognize and reproduce it as part of its total labour.

The commodity is therefore not simply an object that happens to be sold but the basic form assumed by products in a society where production is carried out privately and the connection between producers is mediated through exchange.

Which brings me to another point: Western Maoists only have the translations and defend them with their life, trying to protect the wrong meaning and wrong translations and internalizing them, while not understanding what it actually means. Instead of Educating themselves and others and clearing up these errors to preserve Maos thoughts and Theory in its original, they too bastardize them

One of the key lines here in its original is: „巩固无产阶级的专政或人民的专政,正是准备着取消这种专政……的条件。 建立和发展共产党,正是准备着消灭共产党和一切政党制度的条件。 … 这许多相反的东西,同时却是相成的东西。” Especially that last like does not reflect the actual meaning when translated into English like this. 相成 (xiāngchéng) isn’t exhausted by “complementary.” 成 is in the sense of forming, completing, accomplishing, bringing into being. And this expression follows the classical Chinese idea 相反相成: things that oppose one another can, through precisely that opposition, constitute or produce one another. 这许多相反的东西,同时却是相成的东西。stands conceptually closer to “These many things which stand opposed to one another are, at the same time, things which bring one another to completion.” Or better yet: A exists under conditions in which its own development creates the conditions for not-A.” 巩固……正是准备着取消…… to consolidate X is precisely to prepare for abolishing X 建立和发展……正是准备着消灭…… to establish and develop X is precisely to prepare for eliminating X 建立……进行……正是准备着永远消灭…… to establish X and undertake X is precisely to prepare for eliminating X forever. The repeated 正是 matters here. Roughly speaking it means “is precisely,” “is exactly,” “is none other than.” Mao isn’t saying these institutions will unfortunately become unnecessary someday. He’s making the proposition that their communist function consists in producing the conditions of their own supersession. Another example is: 消灭共产党和一切政党制度 The common English translation says: “the elimination of the Communist Party and all political parties.” But 政党制度 is not reduced to political parties. It is the entire system of political parties. Mao’s point here isn’t “our party disappears but party politics continues differently”, he means that the whole historically specific political form becomes obsolete. Last but not least: 走到消灭任何国家制度的更高阶段去 is spatial in Chinese: 走到, meaning to walk/reach one’s way to. The movement itself leads toward a higher stage characterized by the disappearance of 任何国家制度, any form of state system. The English “advancing to the higher stage when all state systems are eliminated” communicates the proposition but loses some of that meaning and motion. So what Mao is really saying in this excerpt is that A contradiction isn’t merely two externally opposed things. Under determinate conditions, each side can contain the conditions of transformation into its opposite. In another text he talks about this too: In 《论人民民主专政》 (On the People’s Democratic Dictatorship, 1949): after classes disappear, parties and the state apparatus lose their function and complete their historical mission. And even with knowing this, there are more things to consider in the language used. In modern Chinese 走到 can mean “to reach,” “to arrive at,” or “to proceed to.” There is still a sense of movement in the construction, especially because Mao writes 走到……更高阶段去 which roughly translates to, “to proceed toward/reach the higher stage…” You can think of Mao what you want and i am certainly no Maoist but nitpicking and quotemining the English translations will just make you look retarded.
People really think Chairman Mao was one of the greatest social theorists of the 20th century for writing bullshit like this
