The actual details about why the recovered NES cartridges in Wisconsin are so rare: They are a previously undocumented late-production physical variant of the familiar Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt NES combo cartridge—the pack-in that shipped with countless systems—rather than a different game. The gameplay remains identical to the widely known version. What sets these cartridges apart are several physical and manufacturing details that had never been recorded among the millions of copies already catalogued by collectors. Key differences include: •A back label featuring multiple languages instead of the standard English-only text. •Manufacturing and date codes on both the cartridge and manual that place production in the 40th week of 1993 (late August), later than every previously documented run of the title. •Instruction manuals with previously unseen wording, such as “maintenance or service” in place of the familiar “maintenance or repairs.” •Distinct hardware elements, including different screws and a completely different motherboard with markings absent from known copies. These belonged to a small batch of roughly 100 units manufactured well after the NES had passed its commercial peak. They may have been intended as warranty replacements, stock for refurbished systems, or for a planned bundle that never reached shelves. Instead of entering retail channels, the batch was slated for scrap and gold recovery. Because the cartridges survived sealed and untouched, this specific combination of traits remained unknown to the collecting community until their discovery in Wisconsin in 2026. Even these consistent variations in labels, manuals, codes, and internals mark them as a distinct, never-before-seen variant.
