As someone who grew up with 80’s/90’s sitcoms, the new Different World reboot is utter trash compared to the original. It has the same problem everything “modern” does. It’s too slick looking! The Bel-Air reboot had the same problem! It doesn’t have ANY kind of charm, any kind of live audience to break the fourth wall with, nothing that made those sitcoms of the 70’-90’s special or iconic. It’s another soulless Space Jam 2 of “remember that!?” bullshit nostalgia without any of its own identity. Don’t get me wrong, I was born in Charlottesville, but spent ages 2-10 living just outside of Chicago. I grew up with plenty of black centric programming; loved Family Matters and Different World! Grew up with SO MUCH black media for a white boy… But just like the Bel-Air reboot, Different World has lost its’ soul… It’s hollow as fuck!

I have been with the V/H/S series since it started in 2012; the worst by far is Viral, but that in no way makes it a “bad movie”. The new installment, V/H/S Mixtape, is the 9th installment, and finale of the most recent trilogy; the “Beyond Halloween Mixtape” arc. Each trilogy has had a specified arc, the original 3 were about the segments making it into the mainstream and saw the world go nuts at the end of Viral. The second arc trilogy were the “years series” with 94/99/85 which all had to make segments like they were films from those years. The current arc trilogy, Beyond Halloween Mixtape, has been all about weird, odd, otherworldly, “celebration” horror; either celebrating scientific discovery or a holiday/tradition, with the latest looking like a pure “could go anywhere” or do anything kind of feel. That reality is being “re-mixed”. V/H/S Mixtape comes out on October 8th exclusively on @Shudder, and I simply cant fucking wait! Trailer below!
