In the South/inland, migrants' literacy >3 times higher than at origin, in the North-East, much lower SS (yet +). What about women? The picture is very complex, with both areas where female SS >/< than male SS. Gender inequalities & single vs. family migration can be key 👨‍👨‍👧

Three main takeaways: (1) migrant SS was positive throughout 1885-1930 (i.e., migrants' literacy on avg. ~80% higher than at origin), (2) SS much higher for men than for women (~40% higher, yet the gap disappears after WWI), (3) huge spatial variation 🔍

We digitized data from passport requests, census, + other sources 📜📚, across Portuguese districts during 1885-1930. We measure self-selection (SS) with the ratio between migrants' literacy rates (read & write) and literacy rates in the districts of origin 📝

In 1900, Portugal was one of the poorest countries in Europe. Literacy was reallylow (only 33% of men and 17% of women could read & write). Thousands of people crossed the Atlantic every year seeking better prospects (~75% to Brazil 🇧🇷, ~15% to the US 🇺🇸)

This week, as part of our visiting program on migration, we had the great pleasure of hosting @essobecker at @LISERinLUX and @uni_lu. He met tons of people, gave a fascinating lecture about his research on forced migration, and got to enjoy some local flammkuchen in exchange🍕👌
